Our IP attorney is a very outspoken hardline right winger. I know we joke (sometimes serious) about Freddy, Grunty, and Shyster being Trump supporters even though they claim not to be, but this guy seriously is. Anytime there's any discussion of Trump, his input starts off with "Now, I do not support him, however..." and then he goes on a long ramble about how he supports him.

He just got back from a vacation in the UK. He's had kidney stone issues in the past, and he had a problem arise while they were in London. He's going around talking about how terrible the healthcare is in "these damn socialized medicine countries". The way he's describing it is like it's a third world country. Saying the doctors didn't know what they were doing (for something as common as kidney stones? really?), no one was wearing gloves, not sanitary, took 5 hours in the waiting room before he was seen, etc... I'm honestly surprised that he stopped short of saying they used whiskey as an anesthetic.

I'm willing to bet that he's intentionally lying to cover up the fact that healthcare is very good over there.

I mean, I can imagine marginally worse. I'd take no issue with it for marginally worse, but the way he's describing it... woof. You'd think he was in Uganda or something.

Maybe if he wasn't wearing his MAGA hat the doctors would have treated him better

That's funny. At my old job, I accompanied our ERP & ProE specialist on a rollout to our Swedish HQ. He got kidney stones while there, took him right in at the hospital, and never once asked about insurance, how he was going to pay, instead they focused solely on taking care of him. He couldn't stop raving about it.

I think we can all agree that we'd expect no less than what c2i described from a proud Trump supporter.

It's inline with another Trumper I know. Hard line right winger that expected to be pleased about moving to Sweden. Complains about every aspect of the country.

Does he complain they don't speak American?

Almost. They also won't put in the real effort required to learn Swedish.

Several years ago I friend of mine from the UK came over to Walt Disney World with his family for a big vacation. A few days in, one of his daughters took ill and they had to go to the hospital, where she was admitted for a couple days. He was hit with something like a $15,000 bill for services that would've been covered by NHS had the illness happened at home.

Also, I'm willing to bet your attorney's next paycheck that he's 100% bullshitting the story.

Your coworker seems like the type of guy who would complain about not being seen quickly enough in the ED for a stomach bug as we are doing compressions on a patient

Yeah, I think that's the big misconception about single-payer systems. We seem to have this dopey mentality here that feeds an outlook like "I'm here with my King Kong super duper Cadillac coverage and a sore knee, I should be seen before the dope over there who was brought in non-responsive and unable to breathe unaided, but has dodgy insurance."

The ironic thing is everyone thinks they have the King Kong Super Duper Cadillac coverage....and then get pissed when they are told they don’t

My level of care would go down with a single payer system. So no I don’t want it.

Socialized health care should exist. The option to buy in to premium care should exist.

Crazy.

My family and I are lucky enough to have a damn good plan...my wife works for an employer that is generally considered Top 10 in the nation in terms of benefits. So I'll be the first to admit that the selfish side of me does not want to be stuck in the same playing field as every other person in the country. I do agree with shmenguin though....it would be more palatable if those of us who have the means could buy into a premium plan with less wait times, prioritized service, etc.

But healthcare is a right! How can you have more rights than someone else.

One should never be denied actual treatment that will help them. Health insurance is most definitely not a right.
