What a strange day yesterday.

Shortly after waking up yesterday, I got a text alert from my school. There had been a mass shooting at a bar frequented by our students. Counselors would be available later that morning.

2 dead at the scene, 5 wounded. Turns out one of our students is in critical condition, not expected to make it. A freshman, 19 years old. The two dead were also young.

If you thought living in a small, rural town would protect you from mass shootings, guess again. If it can happen here (7000 people), it can happen anywhere.

...and then there was the Kobe and his daughter crash, which made the day worse.

I'm in a fog.
Well, the student died. 18 years old. TV crews hanging around campus all day, bothering students and being annoying. Can't get any coverage of the positive things we do, but they sure as hell can spend the day chasing us around asking "How does it feel?" questions. Ugh.

Suburban sprawl sucks. I know we are dealing with the issue out west of Philadelphia, especially the stretch from Downingtown to Coatesville. Driving along the highway and looking off to my right, it is literally a sea of subdivisions, completely identical.

I am grateful that while we technically live in a "development", all of the houses are unique and there are plenty of trees and uniqueness between the properties.
Since 2000, Lake Wylie has tripled in population to 12,000 on the strength of its good schools, low taxes and proximity to Charlotte’s jobs in the financial and technology sectors. But those schools are filling up, the water system frequently fails under increased demand and 20-mile commutes are stretching to 90 minutes.

Now, the town that grew too fast wants to stop growth.

In December, the York County Council, which is led by Republicans, put a 16-month moratorium on commercial and residential rezoning requests and consideration of any new apartment complexes or subdivisions. It is the most comprehensive ban so far in a state where fast-growing cities are temporarily blocking everything from dollar stores to student housing, the Municipal Association of South Carolina said.

“People say, ‘You’re a business owner. Why do you want to stop growth?’” said York County Councilmember Allison Love, a Republican who owns a jewelry store. “But we’ve passed the point of diminishing returns.”

What is going to kill me is that I was told that this ban does not cover my area, only the portion of York County that is the city of Clover and by the Lake. So all this is going to jump over onto my locality since its really not that much further to downtown than going over the Lake Wylie Bridge.

So, rather than telling everyone, they just continue going about as-is? Smart.

I was living in Sarver at the time. Took me a couple of days to dig out so I could get to work at FedEx.

I remember we had to shovel out a small square in our yard so our dog could pee. She was so confused by the whole thing.

Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up in Landfills
Companies are searching for ways to deal with the tens of thousands of blades that have reached the end of their lives.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features ... -dlQ2EOUX4
All is not lost:
One start-up, Global Fiberglass Solutions, developed a method to break down blades and press them into pellets and fiber boards to be used for flooring and walls. The company started producing samples at a plant in Sweetwater, Texas, near the continent’s largest concentration of wind farms. It plans another operation in Iowa.

“We can process 99.9% of a blade and handle about 6,000 to 7,000 blades a year per plant,” said Chief Executive Officer Don Lilly. The company has accumulated an inventory of about one year’s worth of blades ready to be chopped up and recycled as demand increases, he said. “When we start to sell to more builders, we can take in a lot more of them. We’re just gearing up.”

Cool. So now it's only the attempts at using wind power that are useless. That's a relief...

Our friends had their first baby that night. Had to call an ambulance to escort them to the hospital

Japan probably gets a pass on this because of the propensity of earthquakes, though I'm surprised that coal was top alternative.

this is one of the most ominous news articles ive read in some time. sinking feeling in my stomach as I read it and the strange series of deaths around these two
CBS Evening News has an update on this story tonight:

Lori Vallow Daybell rented and then failed to pay the bill for a storage unit full of the children's things in Rexburg, according to a contract reviewed by EastIdahoNews.com.

Lori began renting for $53 per month from Self Storage Plus on Oct. 1, according to the contract, and surveillance footage reviewed by EastIdahoNews.com appears to show Alex Cox, Lori's late brother who fatally shot her ex-husband, visit the storage unit multiple times.
Surveillance video showed the guy removing large, heavy duffel bags out of the unit.

It’s completely obvious what’s going on. How have these two not been arrested yet?

"I think we ought to sue," he said. "Would that halftime show, would that have been rated PG? Were there any warnings that your 12-year-old son – whose hormones are just starting to operate – was there any warning that what he was going to see might cause him to get sexually excited?" He also asked: "Could I go into a courtroom and say, 'viewing what you put on that screen put me in danger of hellfire?"
Dude got so turned on by the halftime show, he had to call an attorney.
