There is a cartoon that someone did that is C&H for modern times. Basically, Calvin gets diagnosed, gets put on medication, and Hobbes turns back into a toy. I might just be emotional because of my daughter starting Kindergarten and wanting her to keep her wonderful imagination, but I find it tremendously upsetting and I can't put my finger on why it hits so hard.Calvin might have ADHD.

And now I'm depressed.

The first time I came across that abomination (maybe a year ago?) , I had an extremely visceral reaction. Pure anger...bordering on rage. Like Shaf, not really sure I can explain why...but it stuck with me for a couple days.
Then I busted out my complete collection and started going through it again for the first time in years.
So...thanks, prick-who-drew-that. I guess?

How does this impersonator get away with not only plagiarizing the cartoon itself, but also assigning Watterson's name to it?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that had a really visceral, upsetting reaction to it.The first time I came across that abomination (maybe a year ago?) , I had an extremely visceral reaction. Unsurprising the most impactful C&H wasn't penned by Watterson. Hmmm.

Hmmm. What a strange comment...Unsurprising the most impactful C&H wasn't penned by Watterson. Hmmm.
Most impactful? Just because it elicits the exact opposite emotional response as every strip that actually was penned by Watterson doesn't translate to it being somehow more impactful.
Most pretentious? Absolutely. Most tasteless? No doubt. But in no way, shape, or form is it the most impactful.

It's more a commentary that almost every single strip is the same, they don't stand out on their own but shine as a collective work. The bootleg strip makes a statement that triggers a reaction and actually says something. C&H is not much different than Garfield in that way; steady repetition of a few core, safe themes.Hmmm. Garfield has been running for over 40 years, with new comics daily. C & H ran for just over 10 years.
It boggles my mind how Gary Larson and Bill Watterson could just peace out on their comics, and basically retire. Larson licenses Far Side and has calendars each year, but Watterson refuses to do any of that. Jim Davis merchandised the hell out of Garfield, and Nickelodeon will produce a new Garfield cartoon for the network.
Not sure this is relevant to the discussion at hand, but it fascinates me.
Sadly, Garfield is pretty lame these days.
