Star Wars discussion (SPOILERS INCLUDED)

Postby Stoosh » Thu Feb 28, 2019 1:00 pm

Wow, I wonder how crazy the lines and traffic are going to be for this? I will be hitting up the outfitters for costumes first thing
My cousin books trips for Disney through a third-party affiliated company and she knows WDW front and back. Historically speaking, if you're looking for smaller crowds, the best time to go to WDW has almost always been the 3-week stretch that starts with the Monday after Thanksgiving and runs through about December 15. You get in just after the Thanksgiving week crowds leave and before the massive Christmas crowds (that stretch from Dec. 14/15-25/26 is usually the WORST time to visit re: crowd size).

When I last talked to her over the holidays, we got to discussing this very thing because my wife and I want to try to get down there this year (had to cancel a trip we booked in 2017 and we've wanted to go back as soon as possible) and I want to allow for at least a day or two just to be spent in Galaxy's Edge. She said that Galaxy's Edge opening in the fall will almost certainly blow the old "ideal times" schedule completely out of the water. I'll have to check with her again to see if she's heard any updates on what Disney is expecting, but I'd have to imagine they've planned well for it and will have various ways to minimize the impact of the crowds.

I've just come to terms with the idea that it's going to be busier than hell and it will likely be that way for the better part of the next five years (maybe more), and it's going to be part of the experience. It's safe to say that demand is going to be unlike anything that's opened there before, probably even bigger than anything Universal dealt with when Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened.

Either way, I can't wait to see it, whether I get there later this year or sometime in 2020 or 2021. I'm 43 years old and Star Wars was the first thing I really remember falling in love with as a fan. The new films and finally digging into the expanded universe stuff has allowed me to appreciate it all even more. Not ashamed to say the first time I walk into that place, it's probably going to get pretty dusty.

My kids were just asking about when we were going back to Disney and Universal, with Galaxy's Edge in mind. I think it will be several years - the crowds were bad in 2017 when all of that ish was under construction (Hollywood Studios). I can't imagine it when all of it (Toy Story and Star Wars) is opened.

But we're going. Oh yes, we are going.

What does this mean for Star Wars?
Ep IV would've remained with Fox in perpetuity, subject to what amounted to a handshake agreement to never release the original actual version of the film in any media. Distro rights to Eps V and VI were scheduled to revert to Lucasfilm in 2020 iirc. This merger means everything is with Mouseschwitz as of 12:02 AM tonight. I believe Bob Iger made the same handshake agreement with Lucas re V and VI when Dis bought LFL.

The problem, though, is technical. When Lucas was making the stupid Special Editions in the 90s, the negative for the originals were in terribad shape. The restoration involved multiple specialist companies who didn't all document their work, they stripped the negs apart and recolored them, several different stocks were used.... recreating the original films from an analog source wouldn't be impissible, but it could cost tens of millions of shekels and take five years or more.

Now, OG Star Wars is Nerd for 'license to print money'. So I don't think Disney would be stingy here. But it would not be the work of a monent. And they'd be going against Lucas' express wishes.

Do I think we'll see OG SW? Sure. But we're like to have at least two new movies and another TV series first.

I imagine this will be nerdiest thing I type today, but it's really exciting:

Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers and Werner Herzog are in The Mandalorian!
Herzog, naturally, will play a villain: https://www.indiewire.com/2019/03/werne ... 202053033/
Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in “The Mandalorian,” the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it. I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain.

Will it be real Werner Herzog or Paul F. Thompkins Werner Herzog? Either way, I'm in.

They should get real Werner Herzog and have him do a Yelp review of a hotel, or talk about his vacation at the town trash dump.
