Legit gave me goosebumps.
But at the same time, it made me chuckle as it was another one of those "1 minute of content with 4 minutes of credits" kind of deals. haha

Yeah, so this got a notice from Warner/Chappell Music publishing company. It has been co-opted and monetized by the publisher, and the creator is getting zilch. This is a fan film approved by Lucasarts. It's pretty good actually.
Having been on the bad guy side of this situation many moons ago, this sounds very much like a case of fan film guy not knowing how music licensing works, and music publishing company not knowing how social media bad press campaigns get started.

He wasn't making any money on the film to begin with. He demonetized the video as per terms of Lucas Arts agreement to even be allowed to make it. Warner/Chappell Music manually stepped in and claimed his video. It didn't really change anything, but it's just a little scummy.
The problem comes in if he decides to challenge the claim through Youtube's process, which would risk the video being removed or his entire channel being shutdown. He's stated he won't challenge the game mainly for that reason, and he wasn't making money off of it to begin with.

Yeah, LFL basically said "no crowdfunding off our IP, and no monetization". And he adhered to that. I think he would've gotten the same terms from Warner/Chappell if he had asked them. (Had he known to?)
I posted a comment to one of his follow up videos asking if he could share the actual comms from Warner on this, because his response made reference to a Disney and Universal Music Group deal in 2013 that has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand. That's sort of what leads me to think he kinda bumbled into this.
Still, it's a situation where Warner is 'right', but wrong.

Looks like Lucas Film got Warner/Chappell to remove the claim.

"Or the other company"
Yeah, he had no idea he did this wrong.
The thing that bugs me the most here is Lucasfilm did everything right (and 'right'), and they're the ones bearing the brunt of public scorn. People are calling for a boycott of Ep IX, not a boycott of Warner/Chappell controlled music. Honestly, before the public outcry, LFL probably had no idea about the enforcement action.

Right, but I'm not really sure why Lucasfilm and Warner got so much hate over this. The dude used music that he didn't own. I've made a number of shorts and created hundreds of videos both personal and professionally and rule number 1 is make sure you own or license everything. If you don't create the music or you don't license the music, you can't use the music. I get that fan films are kind of in a category of their own and tend to get a pass on licensing, but that guy should have known better. And then to paint LFL and Disney as the bad guys is just factually wrong.Still, it's a situation where Warner is 'right', but wrong.
Still, it's an easy "win" for Lucasfilm to step in and remove the claim and it's the right call. But the creator should have made sure that was all lined up before he released anything.
*correction it was an original arrangement of Williams' themes, not the exact recordings, and Warner was claiming that one was nearly identical. My point still stands.*

Yes, publishing is distinct from a master recording. You might need a master use license, you always need a publishing license. (Generally)

** Ha, everything Williams does is a close variation of someone else's stuff. Warren Zevon had it right: lawyers, guns and money FTW.Right, but I'm not really sure why Lucasfilm and Warner got so much hate over this. The dude used music that he didn't own. Solo is better on a rewatch, even though I liked it the first time.

Watched it with Mrs Tif when it first came out on home video, and i looked at it again just recently. It is amazing how close to disaster the whole Shyriiwook scene plays. I'm still kind of amazed that it worked.

Is anyone watching Star Wars Resistance?
We watched the first 3 episodes at launch, but haven't watched it since. Does it pick up? Get interesting?
