Just pretend they aren't existing characters and ignore comments from others who are getting a richer entertainment experience.

In that case, the characters that are brought from the cartoon to live action are extremely shallow and poorly written. The live action shows give me no reason to care about any of them. They assume knowledge of those characters. The reason Ashoka works in Mando is because of her backstory, not because of anything presented on screen. The character has no weight without the animated show.Just pretend they aren't existing characters and ignore comments from others who are getting a richer entertainment experience.
I get that the cartoons are canon and it's on me to do my homework, but I can't think of any character from the animated series who made the jump to live action successfully. Maybe Saw Gerrera in Rogue One?

Good choice in the actor. He looks better than Ezra.

I'd just got up Wookiepedia and read up on Ezra. Those pages usually have a synopsis for everything a character has done.

Oh yes. You have a plethora

To make sure we're on the same page here, let's just go with Ahsoka as an example.
Things we learn about her in Mando:
- She's the only character we meet up to that point who can actually communicate with Grogu (she's the one who reveals his name)
- She knew the Jedi temple on Coruscant
- She knew Yoda (by extension, if you have familiarity with just live-action stuff, taken together those last two indicate she's been around since the Clone Wars, not that Mando has any idea what that is or means, which is why it's unsaid in this show)
- Mando says the line "A Mandalorian and a Jedi? They'll never see it coming.", which hints such a partnership would be odd, so there's some backstory to plumb there in the future
- She is hunting not just an Imp admiral, but a 'Grand Admiral', which is something that's never been heard in live action before. (That we've seen three seasons of this character in the cartoons is beside the point; you don't need to have seen a minute of that to sense the significance of the statement)
Things we learn about her in BOBF:
- She tells Mando she's a friend of the family (Luke's)
- She tells Luke he's very much like his father, which means she knew Anakin and that Anakin was Darth Vader (this is a relationship that like maybe half a dozen people in the entire galaxy knew)
- She sets up the choice Grogu has between Mandalorian and Padawan
So that's all stuff you don't need to have any knowledge of 'the cartoons' to inform both her character and the larger place she holds in the story, generally. And all of that makes for an uninteresting character to you?
Stuff you definitely need to have seen the animation to understand:
- The Morai bird flying around in the background

I just realized that you don’t like when I call the animated series ‘cartoons.’ That’s funny.
Nearly all of these rely on previous knowledge to actually give them weight. I don’t know if you can separate your knowledge of the cartoons with the character at this point but as somebody who has never watched the cartoons I can tell you that yes, the characters are weak to people who haven’t seen the cartoons. They are hints at a larger world/character but they don’t mean much without knowing the full context.

That's because the land opened in the period between the release dates of those two films. The plan was always to expand character participation beyond that point in the timeline afaik, but I don't think they'll ever include characters who were 'dead' as of Ep VIII - IX.. They started it earlier this year when Boba Fett and Fennic Shand showed up.

I didn't know Boba Fett was there. So it's just a general Star Wars land now without a real story. It makes sense not to limit themselves but the idea of Batuu and being part of that story was cool. Probably even easier to change course now considering how IX was received. That's because the land opened in the period between the release dates of those two films. Lol. How are they such a mess with this? It's the kiss of death. Get a Star Wars movie and then your next movie sucks, your career falls apart, and your Star Wars movie disappears. It's like clock work at this point.

One the one hand, I was stoked to see a movie about fighter pilots IN SPACE! directed by the daughter of a fighter pilot. Yeehaw. On the other, Rogue Squadron is still squarely in the Skywalker/Palpatine timeline that literally everything else occupies. Hate to say it, but it feels like a net push.

This might just be a result of the scheduling conflicts with Jenkins. Just because it’s off the calendar doesn’t mean it’s been cancelled.
