I'm not willing to put it in front of Empire, because I think Ep V works as a dramatic narrative outside of the Star Wars universe much better. You could take that plot and transpose it into a completely different setting and it still works; even tho it cost 50% more than Ep IV, and visited more locations, it plays as a small character drama. All the other movies kind of have to be space operas for their plots to make sense. But I readily put TFA in the #2 spot.

And I agree that I enjoyed it more in 2D than 3D. But I hate 3D with the fire of a thousand suns, so I would do.

I love Daisy Ridley as well. There's something completely awesome about Rey and what she brings to the character.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ridley's performance. My problem is with Rey the character.
she's much farther ahead in TFA in terms of Force ability than Luke was at the end of ANH. Without any training, she mastered the Jedi mind trick, Force lightsaber pull thing (better than Kylo Ren, too) and went toe-to-toe with Ren in a one on one dual (albeit, Ren was injured). She knows as much about the Falcon as Han, flies it better, speaks multiple languages (including being able to converse with BB-8) and has no personality flaws.

I'm not saying it's impossible for all of this to happen, I'm just saying it makes for crappy story telling. It's like playing a video game with invincibility on...there's no challenge. There's nothing to overcome.

That's why she seems like a Mary Sue...just seems like some feminist savior fanfic.

And I would've said the same thing if Rey was a guy. Luke was an imperfect hero, that's what made the OT so great. He learned and developed... he was a whiny piece of **** in ANH, impatient novice in ESB and then became the jedi in ROTJ.

Could've sworn we discussed it here, but alas I can't find any posts.
I like that theory much better than 'Rey Skywalker'. The writer sets forth a very convincing story argument that she's a Kenobi descendant. I've seen it pointed out in other places that with the destruction of the Jedi Council that Kenobi wouldn't be beholden to any vows of celibacy any longer, so he'd be free to catch up on all the strange he had missed out on for all those years. I've seen another theory that both Luke is the one that made sexy time with Kenobi's daughter, and that's where Rey comes from.

Fundamentally, I just don't see that working from a narrative perspective. It's too on-the-nose mirroring Luke's story, being abandoned on a desert planet, and such. She can just be Rey. She doesn't have to have a special bloodline.

Look at Anakin's hair and face. Lucas uses multiple takes and merges them into one take. Gross.

Further down the thread, someone posts a behind the scenes video on editing Phantom of the Menace...and Ben Burtt is visibly disgusted throughout.

That was heavily featured in the People vs. George Lucas movie.

I watched it a second time (this time in 2D, which I prefer) and liked it even more than the first time. The gf thinks it's the best film in the series and she may be right. I love Daisy Ridley. Given the strength and awesomeness of her character, it's silly to complain about a lack of females in the movie. I'd even go so far as to call it a feminist film.
but...but...but...she wasn't included in the new Star Wars Monopoly...

Seriously, the complaining about that crap has surpassed gear grinding levels.

I wonder how much time/money they could've saved by removing Jar Jar completely

Jar Jar was meant to appeal to kids. I was a kid when the movie released, and I hated him. I didn't know any other kids at the time who liked him either.

Her backstory will be revealed in the fullness of time. It's been pointed out before that we're going in to VII-VIII-IX knowing there will be a trilogy. That means you should treat the narrative as one six-hour movie, kind of like LOTR..... which means the fact that we did not see her receiving any training in VII should not be interpreted as her being 'untrained'.

Your point about her general level of awesomeness is a valid criticism, within the confines of the story told in Ep VII. But I'll wait until the full trilogy plays out before jumping on the chirpwagon with you.

Also, Poe can speak with BB-8, too. It seems that speaking droid-beepese is more of a thing in this continuity.

Chewbacca's double, Joonas Suotamo, is a Penn State grad. Played basketball there.

TFA is officially the highest grossing movie ever in North America. It replaced 'Avatar', which was in theatrical release for nearly 320 days. Wow.

Lukewarm pre-sales in China might be an indicator the worldwide record is safe.
