I went two years ago and they were irate at all of Pitts injuries, implying they were fake to slow down their offense. There were a few important injuries, Max Browne, Maddox, one other I think and they were all swearing and booing and it was like come on.. Maddox is our only competent DB and missed the last three series, these aren't fake. Just rubbed me the wrong way. Plus we lost
Was that the game when Kenneth Shane Pickett made his debut on the last **** play of the game?

TIL Mike Ditka played baseball and basketball at Pitt and was also the punter at Pitt

I knew the punter part, did not know the baseball.

Also my favorite Ditka Pitt trivia is that he went to Pitt to be a dentist.

Gameday thoughts, dudes...

1. What's the difference between the Carrier Dome and a porcupine?

2. The Carrier Dome has 35,000 pricks on the inside.

*HONKS BIKE HORN*
*DOES THE WORM*

3. F Syracuse. I hate this trip every time Pitt has to make it because that stupid-ass dome makes it feel like they're trying to play a football game in an empty Sam's Club store.

4. I'm not sure a team has needed a bye week as much as Pitt needed theirs this past weekend. I'm hoping to see at least some of the guys come back from injuries suffered in the UCF game or before. If Stocker is able to go at safety, it would lessen the blow of Ford being out for the first half. If Pinnock is able to go, even better because they can get back to that three-CB set with Jackson, Pinnock & Mathis.

5. I'm also REALLY hoping that at least one of the Davises can go at RB, if for no other reason than to help with depth. I think the toughest remaining defenses that they'll face are the two games immediately in front of them and at the very least, having one of those guys back provides the illusion of a threat. If the Davises are still out for this one, I wonder if Daniel Carter may finally get a few carries.

6. Also wonder if we'll see more of Jake Kradel at RG for Houy. Kradel was in their quite a bit in the second half and he seemed to actually get some push on that side in the running game.

7. I still want to see the offense do a better job at sustaining drives and not trading touchdowns for FGs, because they seemed to leave a ton of points on the board in the first half and it nearly came back to hurt them.

In the first half of the Duke game, the offense managed to get just one first down in it's first three possessions. They got a first down in their first set of downs, then went three & out. Duke kicked a FG on the ensuing possession. Pitt went three & out, recovered a fumble on Duke's possession, and then went three & out again. Ford bailed them out on the next two Duke possessions, first with the pick-six and then the INT on the ensuing drive. Following Ford's second INT, they drove to the Duke 13 when Ffrench lost his mind and got the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Instead of having a good shot to make it 14-3, they settle for FG and it's 10-3.

First possession of the second quarter, Houy gets two penalties - one for holding and then a false start with 3rd and 9 at the Duke 21. Pitt converted the long first down to get 1st and goal, but Pickett threw an INT on the next play. Could have at least been 17-3 or maybe 21-3 at that point. Pitt's defense holds Duke to a three-and-out, gets the ball back but the drive sputters at the Duke 20 and Pitt kicks a FG to make it 13-3. Defense holds again and the offense finally responds with the TD to Mack to make it 20-3.

It was a nice comfortable lead (or so we thought), but they had three possessions inside or right near Duke's 20 in that half that yielded just two FGs and an INT, not to mention the first three to open the game that went absolutely nowhere. They have to do better than in these remaining six games.

8. To that end, Pickett was absolutely incredible in that last drive. I realize Duke was playing back a little, but more of that accuracy and command from Kenneth Shane will be fine.

9. I agree with the sentiments expressed above that Pitt's front seven could have a good night. Syracuse's O-line looked like a mess against NC State last week. I'm excited to see what this defense can do tonight. I think this and most of the games remaining on the schedule will really depend more on the offense's ability to sustain drives and convert more touchdowns.

Excellent Stoosh of the Union post, but I have one gripe: can we hope for specifically Good Davis instead of just any of the Davises?

Good post Stoosh. I enjoy your commentary.

Syracuse stinks. Tommy Devito is half-decent but that team is not good. Give me Syracuse to cover at home, but Pitt to win with the under, 27-24.

I wonder what wrinkles we'll throw in after the bye. Carter getting some touches like Stoosh mentioned? IIRC V'Lique's (two apostrophes seems weird) game against Duke came after a bye. And that was totally out of left field. Curious to see what the Duzz has in store. Be nice if Pitts front 4 can wreak havoc and push us to an easy one. Like that would ever happen though

To that effect- when Terry Bowden took over Akron, he said the stages of a progrum were lose big (Akron was 0-12 the year before he took over), lose small, win small, win big. Pitt luckily never was in the "lose big" camp. But we're dead in the middle of "win small" imo and the time is ripe to win big

New logo related: It has been quite some time since Pitt came up with the new "simplified" seal/crest:

Has anyone in Pittsburgh seen t-shirts/sweatshirts with this new crest? I have been checking The Pitt Shop website - but nothing there...

This is where I'm hoping the run to win the division title last year helps this year's team. Their toughest two games on paper are tonight and next weekend, followed closely by the UNC game because it's on the road and they just haven't managed to slay that dragon.

Their opportunity to win big this year is just to continue to win and hope UVA drops another Coastal game. UVA has four remaining Coastal games left and three of them are at home - tomorrow vs. Duke, at UNC on 11/2, then hosting GT on 11/9 and hosting VT the day after Thanksgiving. I think their best chance to lose one is tomorrow or at UNC.

I hope it happens. Narduzzi drives me nuts sometimes, but this team has a lot of guts and while I know this comes at the risk of seeing them get boat-raced, I honestly do want to see this Pitt defense get a shot at Clemson. Clemson isn't going away any time soon anyway, so I'll take the tradeoff of having to watch Pitt face them every year for the foreseeable future if it means Pitt keeps winning the Coastal and getting the shot to knock them off.

UVA's top CB Bryce Hall is out for the year too. He's projected 1st or 2nd round. They're far from having this thing locked up

For Pitt? Yeah Thursday 11/14. Because we can only play them at home now on Thursdays for some reason
