Love stuff like this. Had every "well it better have this movie" in there that I was thinking of. Surely there were better options for 2019 films to slot in than Joker (and better shots than that one, though not a ton come to mind), but all things said, a fantastic compilation.

for the Christmas season, we decided to check out The Long Kiss Goodnight on Netflix. I don't know how I feel about this movie, yeah, it's terrible and one of the most ridiculous flicks I've seen, but Sam Jackson is gold and there are a few scenes that are really cool. If I would have started by saying there is a scene where a shotgun all of a sudden shoots a fireball out of it and actually blows a hole out of the side of a house and a crazy lady picks up a child and throws her through said hole into a treehouse presumably 20 feet away, you would say, yeah I should probably watch that movie. Maybe even an ice skating scene where this crazy lady catches up to a car chase by somehow lacing up a pair of skates and shooting her way into the action. The end christmas light pulley scene was terrific and Sam Jackson being Sam Jackson with a Shane Black script really works and confuses you into thinking maybe this isn't so bad, but holy **** is this movie ridiculous.

it's definitely got action. We can go back and forth on whether it's a good movie, but one thing I will tell you is I've been thinking about how crazy it is all day! I've only seen bits and pieces of the Fast and Furious movies, but I assume these (at least the later crazy ones that don't make a whole lot of sense) are about as close as we get today to 90s action movies? I would say John Wick, but those are actually good movies.

To be clear, I have never watched the first John Wick movie in continuity. And as a beagle owner, I can confidently say I never will. But I have stitched all of the action scenes together and watched those in sequence, and I've seen JW2. To me, those movies are an order of magnitude beyond even the loopiest 90s action movies. They a genre unto themselves. First, they are directed by stuntmen, so the attention to detail in the laying out of the set pieces is extraordinary. Second, the level of gun play (they call it 'gun fu') is so far beyond what you normally see in a film; Keeanu Reeves can actually run and gun like that for real, and there are numerous videos of him on YouTube training with the folks at Taran Tactical doing live fire three-gun rounds. The meticulousness that the weapon manipulations have is just extraordinary; for as stylized as the scenes are, it's still grounded in real skill, and I appreciate that.

The club scene from JW1 is a masterclass in action staging, and I hope they teach it at film schools forever.

Also, check out the YouTube channel "Corridor Crew". It's a small VFX shop in downtown LA, and they have a series called "VFX Artists React", and they have sub-channels where they react to good/bad VFX, and another where they bring in stunties and react to good/bad stunt work. Both series are pretty informative - they explain how skin pores expand and contract and why black levels can sell a shot! - but the stunt one always delivers because there's usually one or more scenes from like some rando Indonesian or Korean action film where dudes are highwiring a motorcycle or cartwheeling across a building into a handstand on a 10" wide ledge. It's bonkers stuff.

I thought that it was going to be more bio with music. Something along the lines of Bohemian Rhapsody, maybe with an extra drug filter. I wasn't expecting Mamma Mia 3 (which I didn't see the first two so I do not know how far off that comparison is, beyond story line that is). Music in the studio, concerts, sure. I wasn't expecting full out dance numbers in the streets and such.

Man, watched Chef with my kids last night. So good. Really interesting to see the early stages of social media memes and viral posts back when that was filmed 5-6 years ago. I forgot about the kitchen language, so that earned a sharp rebuke from my wife (but she liked the movie). Now my kids want to buy a food truck and eat our way across the country.

One of my favorite movies. Great music, great performances, great looking food, and just a fun, feel-good movie that is devoid of conflict after the initial issues that set Carl Casper on his new path. No third act shenanigans or tragedy, just cooking good food and learning to be a better father.
