The Lord of the Rings trilogy is coming to 4K UHD.
So is The Hobbit, but WGAF.

wonder if they'll try and package both Hobbit and LOTR together to try and make you spend a couple bucks?

Still haven’t seen the Hobbit movies and have zero desire to.

First one is ok. They get progressively worse. Could have been one 3 hour movie, or two 2 hour movies.

My kids wanted to watch them and actually quite like them so I've watched with them and there are definitely some good parts in there, but as a whole, it didn't work for me. I don't remember them being as terrible as everyone says, but definitely some parts that make you want to scream "why"

The most "why" for me was Tauriel.

Although, to be faaaaaaaiiiiiiirrrrrrrrr, it did give us Evangeline Lilly as readheaded Silvan elf. Still a big "why", though.

Here's the thing: the Hobbit films, while mediocre to bad, introduced the series to a group of kids who were too young or not yet born when the OT came out. My kids loved the Hobbitses films, and then we went and bought the OT Blu ray set. They liked those as well, naturally.

The 2 biggest things that hurt The Hobbit were doing 3 movies just for money's sake and the fact that Peter Jackson really didn't want to do the movies.

I think they probably needed 2 movies to cover everything properly, but when they decided they were doing 3, all of the sudden you need 9 hours of screen time and thus you get bullshit like the love triangle.

Tauriel, if left as a badass warrior, would have been a nice way to inject a female presence into a story that was one big sausage fest... But no... She has to be in a love triangle. FU whoever made that decision (it also was addled in reshoots, as Lily originally wouldn't take the role if there was going to be a love triangle)

The first movie is solid, if overly long... But the other 2 are largely crap because they had to stretch them out... The worst being that the second has a completely ridiculous and not even remotely satisfying ending.

The third movie just irked me nonstop, and I have no desire to ever watch it again.

Didn't Tom Bombadil get completely cut out of it? That makes no sense, considering all of the crap they had to put in to fill the movies out.

Bombadil was LotR, not Hobbit. He was cut, though. Still lame, though.

It all went downhill when GDT was no longer making the movies.

That would have been sooooo bad on screen. Some dude prancing around in a multicolored outfit singing nonsense songs that the ring has no power over... Yeah, just what was needed.

I was able to forgive that cut as Tom was more of a deus ex machina than anything.

family movie night is Alien tonight. It will be the kids first R movie and everyone is very excited. I haven't watched the new 4k UHD yet, so I'm more excited than usual. I hope someone cries.

It's not quite that simple.

Don't expect you to sit through 90 minutes of this stuff, but these videos are the best I've found online that explain the origin story of the Hobbit films. There was a labor dispute and political shenanigans that played a big part. It wasn't so much that PJ wanted to make three films to soak money out of consumer's pockets, he also wanted Warner Brothers to invest in the NZ film industry. Plus, he felt proper fcked off by New Line, who had been shortchanging him on royalties over the years.

The real thing that chaps my arse in the LOTR/Hobbit cinematic universe is that Harvey Weinstein will collect profit participation checks from LOTR for the rest of his life.
