they are also throwing a bit of shade over to best picture category by calling this the "popular" movie category...

I dunno...I'm far from an awards show junkie, but at least the Academy has always been consistent in that their awards have been of the highbrow variety. If I want to see awards for stunts, I'll watch the MTV Movie Awards. And there is precedent for fantasy types of movies winning...Return of the King won Best Picture, after all.

In other words, I like that the Academy Awards are not the "most popular in pop culture" awards. Sure, I hate a fair number of movies they put up for Best Picture, but I at least respect the differentiation.

To be fair a lot of best picture nominees don't seem to be well viewed when compared to "popular" films. I haven't looked that info up so I could be wrong. I just always seem to think "I have no idea what that movie is" when I see the nominees for best picture.

Return Of The King is literally the only example of the Academy honoring a sci-fi/fantasy film in 89 tries. Star Wars lost to friggin' Annie Hall, for cryin' out loud. Which I don't even think was the best movie named after a female character in 1977, never mind the best movie out of all of them.

To that point about popularity, I can only find info dating back to 1980, but from then to today, there have only been three instances (ROTK, Rain Main, Forrest Gump) where the top grossing film of the eligibility year also won Best Picture. (Titanic doesn't count, because it was released in December, so 80% of its gross was actually in 1998.)

most popular actor/actress category coming next? Maybe Andy Serkis can get one in that? In the end, I really don't give a **** what they do, but I feel like they are causing more problems than solving the ones they already have with this.

Man, I feel bad for Andy Serkis. Guy can't seem to get a non-performance capture gig.

I'd also rather them bring back the Honorary Award for the televised broadcast. I always enjoyed watching the legends of cinema get up there and tell some good stories

I did not see that film (because superheroes are dumb), but good on him if he wasn't CGified.

The very first Academy Awards ceremony had TWO best picture categories: Outstanding Picture and Best Unique and Artistic Picture. So, while Wings is considered the first Best Picture winner, it really shares the honor with Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans.

Some experienced talent reps estimate that due to the unique situation, Gunn could receive a payout of $7 million to $10 million, if not potentially higher. And, more importantly, he would be free to take on another project immediately. Also affecting the negotiations is that sources say Disney plans on using Gunn's script for the third movie.

There are some really cool old Oscars clips online. Like, I had no idea footage of some of these existed. Here is Louis Mayer (yes, THAT Mayer) presenting Carl Laemmle Jr. with the Best Picture Oscar for All Quiet on the Western Front, in addition to the lovely Norma Shearer getting Best Actress and the Best Writing award.

Also, this clip of Audrey Hepburn giving Jerry Lewis a kiss, while presenting Marty with the Best Picture in 1956. My God, her smile...she was absolutely adorable.

I love watching these. My wife and I will get some champagne and sit down and watch entire broadcast of the old oscars throughout the year. Maybe not fun for everyone, but we have a blast!
