Classics With The Tifs series continued this weekend, with Chinatown.
Shot in the 70s to depict pre-war LA in the late 30s. One of the best scripts in the history of movies. Jack Nicholson not playing Jack Nicholson. Film Noir turned inside out. The source material for Jerry Goldsmith's excellent exercise in self-plagiarism that was the L.A. Confidential score a quarter century later. This thing is exceptionally good at movie. I understand if you can't separate art from artist (especially as Polanski has in in-screen caneo in a famous scene), but it really is an extraordinary thing.
It's fun to watch movies set here, and almost all the locations are accurate as named and depicted. Real estate transactions in the northwest Valley feature prominently, which is where we live. The overarching story (criminal manipulation of water rights to grow the city) is accurate enough to real history too, if the individual particulars (........*ahem*......) are totally fictionalized.

Forget about it, tif. It’s Chinatown.
I love that movie. The Two Jakes? Not so much.
Somewhat related, there’s apparently a Philip Marlowe movie coming out starring Liam Neison as Marlowe. Kind of an odd choice but I’m always down for a good film noir.

Looks good. Auch Auf Deutsch. The last film version I saw had John-Boy Walton in the lead role.
