Besides the prequels (well, the first one anyway), has there ever been a prequel that people actually did ask for? Maybe The Hobbit until PJ decided to make it a trilogy.

Midnight Sky offered nothing. It was just there as a space movie. The whole "gotcha" at the end was very predictable.

And then they just sit there, fake typing at the console while the credits roll. "Guess we have to go to the Jupiter moon?" Weird.
I needed more - like what the hell happened. More on why he was a hermit living on a research station. Evidently the book goes into a little more detail, but not much. More of a work of fiction that has sci fi elements, rather than a sci fi book or film. I guess from that lens, it's OK...but I wanted more.

You could figure it out on page 2 in the book. I honestly wondered why they made a thing it was so poorly done

Not that they asked for it, but temple of doom has to be one of the best ones.

Eh that's technically a prequel since the events take place prior to Raiders, but it doesn't really follow any of the prequel conventions. It doesn't provide any sort of backstory that informs the previous work. The only real reason it was set in the time period before Raiders was because Lucas didn't want to do Nazis again.

Does Godfather II count?

X-Men First Class is one of my favorites. Godfather Part II is half prequel I guess?

It's possible for a prequel to be good, I just can't remember any where a fan base was hankering for it prior to release other than Star Wars. I enjoyed JJ's Trek movie but were the fans really asking to see how Kirk met Spock?

Does an origin story for an existing film IP count as a prequel?

In my mind, I would include Casino Royale, but not Batman Begins. CR takes place within the larger Bond continuity, with character/actor crossover, but BB is the first of a sub-set of Batman movies that don't have any bearing on the previous films.

I welcome that Sopranos prequel if they ever finish it.

I watched Nowhere, Sorry to Bother You, My Cousin Vinny, and The Firm this weekend...

We wanted a fun, classic (Vinny), a new movie that we've never seen (Bother), an older classic that she's never seen (Firm), and a movie that I haven't seen but I knew was horrible (Nowhere)...solid Monday to recoup from drinking for the last three days...

Sorry to bother you is one of my favorite movies of recent years past. I still remember my wife looking over in the middle saying I bet you got stoned before you watched this. I did and it was worth it.

My favorite part of The Firm is and always will be Wilford Brimley's villain turn. He was positively malevolent in that.

That has more of a Jame Gumb vibe as opposed to funny-internet-meme vibe.
