Did you watch Big Bang Theory? Did you see (or just know) Amy's comments on Raiders? That Indy played no part in the outcome of the story arc..

Except the Nazis wouldn't have found the Ark without Indy's intervention. Or if they had, it would've taken them considerably longer.

They were famously digging in the wrong place because they didn't know to take back one kadam off the Staff of Ra to honor the Hebrew god whose ark this is, and that was because Indy got the actual headpiece from Marion. It was only when Belloq noted the bootleg dig site while musing about bulldozers and fine china that they realized what was up.

There is also a deleted scene that the bit about not looking into the Ark when it is opened or directly touching it was also translated by Imam off the headpiece. That's only hinted at in the final cut as Indy and Sallah knew to use the wooden poles to extract the Ark from the stone chamber, and Indy warned Marion not to look at it once opened. If Indy hadn't intervened the Nazis would've known to dig in the right spot and known the, er, safe handling protocols.

But that's sort of a moot point, because the only reason they were on the island with the sub base in the first place is because Indy took the Ark from them and was escaping aboard the Bantu Wind which was stopped and boarded by the U-boot; the original plan was to put it on the flying wing aircraft and fly it straight to Berlin. Belloq would not have accompanied the prize on that trip, because it was only a 2-person aircraft, and therefore the Ark would not have been opened on that island at all.

tl;dr -- Amy is a dummy.

There is also the consideration that the Nazi's efforts to track down Marion hit a stonewall, because they ultimately only get to her by following Indy to Nepal. So it's possible that without Indy they may not have ever retrieved the headpiece, or even the negative image from Toht's burned hand.

Forgot to comment on this yesterday, but I do not have a problem with this take. Raiders is a movie that I dedicate an afternoon to ahead of time so I can watch it start-to-finish. LC is a movie I'm okay picking up midway through and watching to the end.

LC was written by the same guy - Jeffrey Boam - who wrote Lethal Weapon 2, and both were released the same summer. That's a solid resume, even if you don't recognize that a few years earlier he (co)wrote Innerspace and The Lost Boys.

He was working on a draft of Indy 4 when he sadly passed away at a very young and all-too-soon 53 years of age. That draft was leaked to the internets a number of years ago, and while KOTCS carried over many plot elements of his draft, the final product shares almost none of its story sensibility.

Very interesting. I never knew LW2 (my favorite of the series) and LC (also my favorite of the series) were written by the same guy.
