The book has been on my to read radar. Norton just pitched it on Rogan. And pumped its music. Set in 50s unlike the book. Compares it to noir like Chinatown. I'll make sure to see it eventually

Just watched the “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” trailer for the first time

I’ll set the over under on the number of times I cry during my first viewing at 7.5.

Definite Hollow Man vibe, but a much better looking version of that.

While I'm generally in favor of things like de-aging actors or using a CGI Peter Cushing to reprise a role he starred in 40 years ago, but to me this is taking that kind of technology a step too far:
James Dean Reborn in CGI for Vietnam War Action-Drama
Adapted by Maria Sova from Gareth Crocker’s novel, Finding Jack is based on the existence and abandonment of more than 10,000 military dogs at the end of the Vietnam War. Dean will play a character called Rogan, considered a secondary lead role.

"We searched high and low for the perfect character to portray the role of Rogan, which has some extreme complex character arcs, and after months of research, we decided on James Dean," said Ernst, who also produces with Golykh for Magic City Films alongside Donald A. Barton of Artistry Media Group.

"We feel very honored that his family supports us and will take every precaution to ensure that his legacy as one of the most epic film stars to date is kept firmly intact. The family views this as his fourth movie, a movie he never got to make. We do not intend to let his fans down."

While Finding Jack will be live action, The Hollywood Reporter understands that Dean’s performance will be constructed via "full body" CGI using actual footage and photos. Another actor will voice him.

I agree. Never mind Uncanny Valley, the ethical concerns here are towering.

Aside from Fred looking like Sam Darnold, the graphics looks nice. I also just remembered that Zac Efron is voicing Fred. That's a **** decision when Welker is alive and kicking (and voicing Scooby in the movie).

Saw Doctor Sleep (sequel to the Shining) last nite. For those of you fans of the Shining, it’ll answer a ton of questions. I haven’t seen it but I was able to follow the whole premise without any issues. My gf is a big fan of horror genre and she was all giddy about how it followed the Shining so I’d say this should get high marks from King fans.

I had never heard of Steven Soderbergh's newest film The Laundromat, based on a book about the Panama Papers. It's on Netflix of all places, and it has a ridiculous cast - Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Jeffrey Wright, the dude that Khaleesi locked in a vault, and a host of other familiar faces. It has a real Big Shortesque vibe, where certain characters speak directly to the camera and explain things to the viewers.

Evidently, the law firm depicted tried to block the film's release on Netflix a couple of weeks ago, but it didn't work.

It's not bad, but probably would've worked better as a limited series. Lots of disjointed stories that could've used fleshing out.

IMdB has a lower viewer rating (bots?), but metacritic is a little better. Worth checking out.
Agree with it probably working better as a limited series, but the story is just crazy. I really enjoyed it. This world is controlled by crooks.

The book was very average, so this is encouraging.

Certainly doesn't get better with multiple rewatches. You know what's coming and you know how it ends. For as critically acclaimed as it may be, it's pretty much all surface, imo.

American History X is a movie that feels really cool and edgy and important when you're in high school. Same with Fight Club.

Fight Club was fun escapism that at no point made me feel like there was a broader point.

American History X made me feel sullied and unusual.

I totally disagree with this. The broader point of consumerism = bad is plastered all over that movie.

It's nothing more than a conceptual McGuffin. It may have played a larger role in the book (which I have never read), but in the movie it sorta disappears from the narrative after the first fight club meeting. They use it to get Narrator to Tyler, and then that's it.

Project Mayhem is all about taking down consumerism society. It's definitely more prevalent in the book, but the movie has that theme throughout as well.

Way more to Fight Club than consumerism. It was about how the doldrums of work sucks the life out of us. Norton's character was desperate to feel like he was alive, that's why he was going to those counseling groups, to see people exposed and talking about feelings and life. The fight club attracted other men in similar circumstance, in that they were convening and engaging in carnal indulgences.

Obviously there are more themes than just consumerism. That was just the most obvious example. It's deep to high school kids but when rewatching as an adult, it's eye-rolling.

Noted this review for Midway:
These terrific actors and many more are stuck playing one-dimensional characters who have to deliver lines straight out of a second-rate, mid-20th century war movie, while competing with 21st century CGI pyrotechnics.
Yup...pretty much what I expected.

Agreed, though of the two, Fight Club still holds up a lot, lot better.

Shaggy and Scooby are dead on, Daphne is good, Velma is too hot, and Fred is a wreck.
