Scarlett Johansson is facing backlash from trans actors in Hollywood after the Ghost in the Shell star signed on to play a trans crime boss in a new film. Titled Rub & Tug, the movie will reunite Johansson with her Ghost director Rupert Sanders, and Johansson will play trans crime boss Dante “Tex” Gill, who operated massage parlors that doubled as prostitution hubs.

Several trans actors have spoken out against Johansson’s casting, asking that trans actors be cast instead. (In response to the criticism, a rep for Johansson told Bustle that critiques “can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”)
I'm telling you right now, no matter how much progress will ever be made, these people will *never* be happy. Perpetually victimized...it's exhausting. I had a good laugh at this Tweet.
Wen cis women play trans men you are reducing the existential experience of a trans man as playing dress up. cis people cannot tell trans stories- don't have the range. If they did, they would empathize with the reality of how problematic, dismissive and fetishizing this is.
This is no different than able bodied people playing folk with disabilities and winning awards for it. How do you tell a story of a gender variant human without involving trans people? Our xp is far too large & complex to be limited within the confines of the cis imagination.#how

I'm way more disturbed that they refer to her as the "Ghost in the Shell" star.

I remember Commando from the random boobs after he crashes into a hotel room. Completely unnecessary, and would never happen today (for good reason), but 13 year old DG66 appreciated the scene.

Tango and Cash has a similar scene in a parking garage.

Watching movies from the 70s and 80s, it's shocking to see how uptight we've become in regards to nudity.

That actress has two doctorates and founded a thing called "Loveology University". She's a sex therapist today.

Bingo tif. Studios have absolutely no financial or practical interest to put unknown trans actors in roles. Essentially this comes down to "they should do it to advance our cause!" That ain't happening anytime soon, unless an already established star goes trans.

Actually, I hadn't read what the story was. I just saw 'Ghost In The Shell' director and ScarJo and thought it was a big movie. 'Rub & Tug' is basically an art film with an expected budget of $30 million. There isn't nearly as big a risk on a show like that, so I'm a bit more inclined push this towards the shenanigans-y side.

I look forward to the day where no one acts anymore. Everyone just plays themselves in movies and shows because pretending to be someone else or someone from a different “group” is just too offensive to everyone.

"F me Daddy." -The Lion King.

It's what made in a memorable movie.

Will be absolutely shocked if anyone gets that reference.

It's called acting, not being. You want to be outraged at unrealistic casting? Let's talk about Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist.

Honestly, that's got to win because it's not just a punchline but it changes the whole plot of the movie.

Back to the Future III was much better than II, thanks for the recommendation. I had no recollection of that movie, except for the very end.

Next up was E.T., which was a big hit. Sure, it’s a bit hokey, but sweet in a certain nostalgic way.

My 12 year old commented, “This Spielberg guy really knows how to make fun films, huh?” We haven’t talked about Schindler’s List or Amistad yet, but the 80s-90s films we’ve watched (Jurassic Park, Raiders, E.T., Back to the Futures [yes, tif, I know he produced them, Zemeckis directed them], and Goonies) are a lot of fun.

12...... that's a good age to sit him down for Empire Of The Sun. He'll relate to Jim, and when he says, "I can't remember what my parents look like," it'll pack extra punch.
