if you could only recommend one film from 2022, what would it be? Assume they haven’t any films released in 2022

I’d say Top Gun: Maverick. Best blockbuster in a long time. Banshees of Inisherin is close but is a little too niche

Over the last year I saw a lot of movies that fit the 'new to me' description, but not very many that were new in 2022.

Kramer vs Kramer fits this category for me. What a great film. It should be shown in high schools with how it handles things as complex as divorce conflict

I wish my parents were as emotionally intelligent as the characters were

I can't remember why but I had to watch Kramer v. Kramer in law school. It might have been for Theories of Conflict.

I couldn't sleep, so I watched St. Elmos Fire for the first time last night. Seen most of the other Brat Pack movies, but never this one.

It was, strange?
I came close to doing this same thing. Ive never seen it either, but man that song
The song is epic.
That synthesizer hook....

The Pale Blue Eye was a stinker despite good performances from Bale and Melling.

I'd say Tar, I think it will end up being the like definitive "me too" movie, as I think it does more to explore/explain the power dynamic without obsessing over it than any other movie will be able to do.

Watched Strange World last night. Interesting story. I dig it. After all the hoopla, I expected the kid being gay was going to be the main story line. It was barely even a part of the plot. I guess I should have saw that coming.

Disney really hitting hard with the “break the generational trauma cycle” theme lately.

I really wish they got away from the bubble shape characters, though. It just looks dated.

I’m not sure what you mean. Like, make the humans that live on the back of a giant turtle and have to travel to its heart to eliminate a parisite while the immune system (played by critters) of said turtle attacks them wasn’t realistic looking enough for you?

I mean the style they used for the actual human characters, not the 'aliens', etc. Not a big deal, it just feels dated to me.

Oh yeah, that's right up there in the queue, should get to it soon.

I haven't seen enough of 2022. Banshees probably the best thing so far, but again, the selection pool is pretty light.

2022 "new to me", I dunno, probably Love Exposure, just because I feel like everyone should see how far they can make it through this 4-hour movie before they get tired of it (if they do at all).

Cars 3 is pretty ****.
"Of all the Pixar films that I've watched..."

Never watched list for me: Cars 2 & 3, Brave

Can't speak on those three.
Brave is pretty great but gets hate for some reason.
Trailer for Brave really turned me off, but when I finally got around to it I was very pleasantly surprised.

The gentlemen was the only “new to me” that stood out for me last year.

But also melds into the general Colin Farrell appreciation mindset. Banshees was easily my favorite movie of the year (granted sss). I think I’ve only seen that Tar, the whale and women talking in theatres this year (and glass onion on Netflix).

“New to me” last night was Do The Right Thing. I really enjoyed it. Strong performances all around and funny to look back at how young everyone was in it.

Started our annual watch of all the best picture noms. I didn’t expect Elvis to be so… Baz Luhrmanny. In retrospect, I should have.

It's a trope, but I still don't fully understand why Mookie throws the garbage can through the window.
