I’m amazed that y’all can still be excited for movies like Indy 5. I was never huge into Indy movies, but even movies I am huge into rarely resonate with me when they make the “way too late” sequel
TG:M and BR 2049 were nice surprises but diamonds in the rough. Most of these kinds of movies are **** cash grabs

speaking of unnecessary movies, the new White Men Can’t Jump has a 4.5 on IMDB. Love it

I saw the original Indy films in theaters, and it was a big deal back then. None of those sequels felt like cash grabs, but now that's not the case. Kind of sad that Indy probably isn't good.
And if it underperforms, standby for James Mangold's Star Wars film to get shelved/canceled. That's how they roll over there.

I'd add Rocky Balboa, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Trainspotting 2 to the list of "diamonds in the rough." Hell, throw in Bill & Ted Face the Music too.
I'm looking forward to a proper Indy sendoff.

So, I ended up going with Year One, The Long Halloween, and Dark Victory. I haven't started Dark Victory yet.The consensus seems to be to start with Batman Year One from 1987 and then there are a bunch of routes to go from there...
It took me a little bit to get used to the pacing of a graphic novel. Stuff moves fast and it's not very deep. In contrast, I'm reading the Myst novels and they're the opposite, almost mundane level of detail about the environment. So my calibration was a little off. That said I liked Year One, and The Long Halloween was superb. I'll read Dark Victory and probably close out with The Dark Knight Returns. I don't think I'll be reading graphic novels regularly moving forward but this was a pretty fun diversion.
I was browsing through Max (the HBO/Disco service) yesterday and noticed that Year One and The Long Halloween (and others) were made into animated films. I watched Year One last night and it is just about an exact reproduction of the graphic novel, very cool. So I guess in a roundabout way this was the correct thread.

After "reading" The Martian, I decided to check out the movie last night. That's one of the most loyal adaptations I've ever seen. There were some subtle changes and a few things left out but the majority of the scenes were taken directly from the book, many times with verbatim dialogue. You don't see that very often. I enjoyed it, but the audiobook is better.
Also funny that I had no idea it was Ridley Scott until the end credits. It made sense after the fact with the many long and beautiful establishing shots. If there's one thing Scott is known for, it's sci-fi scenery porn.

They repurposed a lot of the design language from Prometheus for The Martian. In some cases actual props and wardrobe are just redressed.

Welp, we made it through 52 minutes of the new Shazam movie. That's longer than the Ant-man movie we attempted last week. I know GotG did well at the box office to the point publications were saying "iT's NoT sUPerHeRo FaTiGue..." But for us, it very much is.
We did start Heat the other night, and my teenagers loved it...wife not so much, of course.

Heat is a weird movie. I honestly hadn't really heard about it until the mid 2010s but I found that amazing since it was really the only movie with DeNiro and Pacino in the same scenes
it's not a bad movie and it has some amazing parts (particularly the gun fight which is alltime great) but the movie is very clunky at times too. Don't care about the Pacino family drama at all. Pacino himself is, unfortunately, post-Scent of a Woman Pacino which is not even close to the Godfather I and II performances. DeNiro isn't bad but he also doesn't excel like other films too

I've tried to watch Heat twice over the last 20 years and just got bored both times within 40 minutes. But I'll disqualify my opinions since I've tried both Godfathers multiple times and never finished them. Obviously I should take this to the bad takes thread because I couldn't finish Good, Bad, Ugly and don't think I finished Tombstone either

I was just thinking about something related to this. Access to all kinds of content skews tastes and likes. For instance, my 17 year old watched The Irishman earlier this year and claims it's the greatest movie he's ever seen. Fine. That may be accurate because he's never watched Godfather, Citizen Kane, Goodfellas, etc. But he can watch the Irishman because it's on Netflix.Wait also The Irishman.
Similarly, he was raving about "Machine Gun" by Jimi Hendrix being the best Hendrix song. He has access to millions of tracks, and somehow Machine Gun speaks to him more than say "Hey Joe" or "Voodoo Child (slight return)" did for me when I was his age. I had classic rock radio (WDVE!) and whatever cassettes or CDs I could buy or borrow. At that point, it was Hendrix's three studio albums. My son has access to all of the live albums, rarities, lost studio recordings etc., which skews or alters tastes and likes.
Same with films - the ones that are easier to get to (Netflix etc.) are memed about, shared, gif'ed etc. Shows and films that are dropped from these platforms will fade away, and obscure films may disappear forever. I'm sure it's already happening to the very early movies.

Yeah, I mean think about all of the composers, compositions, etc that had to have existed pre-1900 and unless you're a Jeopardy champion you can probably only name like 15-20 famous composers (if even that much).I was just thinking about something related to this. I enjoyed the Irishman but it's going to be forgotten to history. it's not really that good and had some major flaws that won't age well (specifically the de-aging was pretty damn bad)

I thought this was bad enough when I read the second sentence but it got even worseI've tried to watch Heat twice over the last 20 years and just got bored both times within 40 minutes. to me it's incredible how a film like the Godfathers or G,B&U can be 3+ hours and still not have a single wasted scene. I admit when I was younger it was really difficult for me to sit down and watch them but those three in particular, along with Goodfellas and the Matrix are my favorite five movies of alltime
And as much as I love Tombstone you can probably cut 20 minutes of the love story out
