Re Baz Luhrman

I will defend the honor of Moulin Rouge til the cows come home, but I've never really liked anything else of his.

My problem was that it never actually settled in and told a story. You know, like a movie would do. This was a 2 and half hour montage.

Well, even Rocky had a montage, so....

“New to me” last night was Do The Right Thing. I really enjoyed it. Strong performances all around and funny to look back at how young everyone was in it.
:thumb: Great movie.
It's a trope, but I still don't fully understand why Mookie throws the garbage can through the window.
The Spike Lee explanation I remember is that Mookie doing it changed the crowd’s anger from at Sal/the police to at his Pizzeria. That Mookie was saving Sal’s life

He also has complained that while people ask about that because then thinks “why do they worry about that and not that a black guy was killed?” And I think he bungles that because I don’t think anyone is saying the building is more important. But that the cops were so laughably villainous, of course they were murderers. But Mookie didn’t have to make matters worse

Also, for me, I never understood…are we supposed to LIKE Mookie? He comes off as such an annoying character, I have no idea if we’re supposed to like him or not

You People was entertaining. It has some funny moments, and Eddie Murphy doing comedy is always a good thing. Lots of cringey stuff in it though.

Best picture watch: Top Gun Maverick. I know that this is well liked here and I get it. It’s a mindless formulaic blockbuster. The action scenes are fun. Everything else is… not so fun. I don’t see how it earned a best picture nom. Best actors performing stunts? Sure. The real reason is so the Academy can say “see, we nominate popular movies too.”

This should’ve had a cinematography nom, not best picture. It’s a crime that it wasn’t nominated for cinematography.

Yup, this is why they went back to 10 noms after The Dark Knight got snubbed.

A Best Picture nom is a bit more understandable than the adapted screenplay nom, which is bonkers.

I hope we’re not about to have a conversation about the importance of structure in screenplay as if that forgives everything bad about the writing.

I know I'm a broken record on this, but TGM is two scenes (the initial crew training when they're all in the sky, and then the final blow up the death star sequence or whatever) and everything else is just shallow filler, save for the Val scene.

At least the original had decently-enough realized characters that the scenes on the ground were actually interesting at times. The interpersonal conflict drove the action more, not some unnamed foreign enemy.

Again, I can perfectly understand liking TGM, it's more surprising that people can't understand NOT liking it.

Well since we have had a multi-post convo regarding technicalities of writing and not one about the quality of it.......

I haven’t read the screenplay. I have heard the dialogue and obviously seen the story and the beats and noted how it made sure to follow a very simplistic formula rarely straying from the structure set up in the original movie. I can only assume it was nominated based on structure and action lines because it certainly wasn’t for the dialogue or nuance of character. I’ve read hundreds of scripts, and provided coverage on hundreds of scripts. I’ve recommended writers and more often thrown scripts in the trash without passing them on. Structure is expected. I’m not rewarding structure.

So now I'm hitting up movies I haven't seen in either a long time, or never.

Watched Airplane over the weekend. I probably watched it a long time ago, but I didn't really remember it outside of some of the classic lines. It has it's moments, but wasn't as good as I thought I remembered it.
