Impressive hurdles being constructed to make Die Hard a Christmas movie and Christmas movies no longer Christmas movies. This is the real war on Christmas.

White Christmas not a Christmas movie? The ending is one of the christmasiest christmasy moments in the history of film. Exact same argument for Wonderful Life. Get out of here with this nonsense.

But Die Hard

Well, so is choosing the setting of your story. That seems oddly specific.
There must be something intrinsic to the story that requires it take place at [time of year] for it to be a "[time of year] movie" imo.

Is Field of Dreams a baseball movie? I mean, couldn't it have been a football field with Frank Filchock instead of Shoeless Joe?

Name one thing in either movie has to happen at Christmas. White Christmas is about veterans of the Battle of the Bulge (which coincidentally happened in late December), and the plot of It's A Wonderful Life unfolds because George Bailey fell into icy waters (2x), which could happen at any time of winter.White Christmas not a Christmas movie? The tradition of watching them at Christmas is far more Christmas-y than the movies themselves.

Nope, nothing Christmasy here.

Why couldn't Labor Day Weekend be Amity Island's biggest weekend for tourism?

First Blood is a Christmas movie.
The Last Boyscout is not only a Christmas movie, but also makes a fine sequelish flick to Die Hard.

Nothing to see there. Nothing Christmasy at all. It's only Christmasy because people watch it on Christmas.

But what if the gathering/festivites in DIe Hard was a retirement, birthday party, wedding, etc? It wouldn't be a Christmas movie.
White Christmas (which is a favorite of mine, and wished the damned soundtrack was properly available, but isn't because of recording contracts of the time) is set during Christmas to help save Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye's beloved general's ski resort during the Christmas season.
Don't get me wrong: I love Die Hard, but McClane could be headed to LA for a wedding or some such and the movie would still be great.

I assure you, he has an answer for that. Because he repeats it every year despite it not being grounded in any kind of logic or reality. It's a whole big scheme based around that core premise of that gathering only being possible as a Christmas party. It's the central tenat of the trope.
Using the inverse of the premise to discount actual Christmas movies is a new wrinkle, though. It's an annoying and unwelcome but clever troll job.

Some of the specifics of the story are fairly unique to baseball and the emotional pull of "America's Pastime". Shoeless Joe transcends the sport in a way Filchock simply can't. (Ray's father's support for Jackson is what initially drove the wedge between the two, and I can't imagine a scenario where a guy would be a fan of Filchock to such a degree) This isn't an easy swap out. Imagine the final scene of the movie, but Ray and his dad chuck a Duke around. There's no heft to that, whereas that scene as filmed makes me bawl....... and I hate both my dad and baseball. Is Field of Dreams a baseball movie? There are myriad other explanations for why each individual condition precedent of the story could be satisfied. But there isn't anything else that explains why they're all fulfilled at the same time with the same economy of storytelling, or which provides the same emotional framework. McClane getting on a 747 and flying across the country to reunite with his estranged family for Bud from Accounting's retirement party doesn't invest the audience with any broader context or give you a reason to root for the character. But what if the gathering/festivites in DIe Hard was a retirement, birthday party, wedding, etc? And the Waverly benefit in White Christmas is because of unseasonably not-snowy weather keeping tourists away. Connection to Christmas is an aside.
