Well, if your job is to watch movies and comment on them, and that means you have to see all of them, I can imagine stringing a few Dial Of Destinies, and Blood and Honies, and Quantumanias, and Madame Webs together you can get a little case of what-am-I-even-doing.

So the "you" in "reminds you why you like movies" is critics? I can't wait to watch Madame Web, by the way. I bet it's hilarious.

I have no idea what Madame Web is but The Daily Show has been hammering it.

Their dislike of it has put it on my radar.

Not necessarily critics. My job used to involve seeing like 80% of movies that came out some months.

Movies are like wine to me. I really really want to like them and try all kinds, but I don't have the time/$$ to commit so I watch a movie here or there when they are on TV or a streaming service.

I think the last time I was in a theater was 2017.

A great movie i a top of the line theater with a big old bucket of buttered popcorn is an amazing experience.

I still watch alot of movies at home, but a movie theater experience is really top notch when all things come together.

I try to go to the theater at least like 2-3 times at. There was a point in 2019-2021 where a lot of the new movies sucked but there have been a lot of worthwhile ones recently

I’m becoming frustrated at the industry overall because as we all know, most new films are trending towards being sequels, prequels, remakes and reboots which to me is very creatively bankrupt but there’s been enough in the last few years to keep me engaged. Like for example I am excited for Dune 2 despite it being both a reboot and a sequel

1) Is Dune/2 a reboot? It's just a new adaptation of the same source material, but I don't know that it's a reboot. (I never saw the 2021 film, so I don't know)

2) Dune 2 was cowritten by Jon Spaihts, the original writer of Prometheus. To the extent the latter was a bucket of turds is largely down to where they veered from Spaihts' original story ideas and into Lindelof's rewrites. If Dune 2 is as good as advertised, it makes that decision look even more ridiculous with the benefit of 10 years of me moaning about it incessantly hindsight.

The movie theater experience would be great if it weren’t for the other people.

The other people are the experience. Otherwise it's just a really big living room.

new adaptations are reboots imo
to start (something) anew : to refresh (something) by making a new start or creating a new version

If it’s a good audience sure. You must understand that an LA audience is much different from a Pittsburgh audience.

other people aren’t the experience at all. It’s the audio and video being infinitely better than what I could afford and also the fact that I am focusing on the movie (actively not looking at my phone)

This is why I go on Wednesdays before noon. With exception to the times we go to a family movie with my wife and daughter, every movie I have seen in the last 4 years had theaters in which the total number of people inside the theater was under 10. Every single time.

Eh, I get the audience/shared experience angle, especially for comedy and horror. End Game was the most fun I've ever had in a theater and a lot of that was due to the audience being SO into it.

It's dune part 2, not dune 2. This is the 2nd half of the first novel. Sounds like it may even go as far as set up the next novel (Messiah), so that would be dune 2 if you want to look at it that way

Cinematically a reboot is a new story in an existing universe that ignores previous continuity(ies). A new adaptation of existing source material isn't really that; retelling the same story is not a reboot.

The 'quality' of the audience isn't really the point. The existence of it is the purpose, why movies are movies and not TV. As time has moved on the technical aspects of theatrical vs at-home have evened out, and in today's age the at-home experience can offer technical parity with 95% of cinemas (esp wrt picture). The whole experience of going to a place - sitting in a room full of people who you sense and react with - is simply not as good when watching at home. It's akin to sports; it's just not the same thing on TV, no matter how good. (I mean, the whole point of the endeavor is trying to make you feel like you're there.)

I say all of that recognizing that 1) people generally suck; and 2) in accordance with the foregoing I hate people; and 3) a randomized collection of people is not often a recipe for a swell time.

That's not a subtle distinction, edward, you are right to correct us. I imagine I'll be doing much of that myself when the second season of The Last Of Us hits. ("It's TLOU Pt 2, motherf**kers" lol)

We usually go super early in the morning or super late at night...so we don't run into many issues with other people even for popular movies.

End Game was one of those once in a lifetime things where having an audience being there and being so vocal made the experience even more amazing. Seeing Ghosbusters: Afterlife a few years ago when it came out with a full theater of ghostbusters fans was fun too.

That's ok, I call it dune part deux. My daughter and I are the only ones that want to see the new one, everyone else bailed after the first one. No more desert power for them. I'm going to do the responsible thing and let snake daughter skip school for this one.

If I remember correctly, there was confusion from some how this one ended in the theater. I think a lot of people are going to appreciate the first movie more after seeing what happens next. I'm very excited
