Big Perfect Storm fan here. It's easily in my top 3 most watched films. It was a perfect nexus of interests for me when I was frustrated in my early 20s. If it had been on VHS I would've worn it out.

The book was excellent, too. I grew up near Gloucester, so it had a little more import for me. All that misery for swordfish though...ugh.

There is a chapter in that book that opens with an excerpt of an old sailor's memoir detailing how it felt to drown. That always stuck with me.

The Descendants was great but depressing and I'll never watch it again.

That sounds horrific to read.

Streets of fire is awesome. Unfaithful is a good movie with her.

"The instinct not to breathe underwater is so strong that it overcomes the agony of running out of air. No matter how desperate the drowning person is, he doesn't inhale until he's on the verge of losing consciousness. At that point there's so much carbon dioxide in the blood, and so little oxygen, that chemical sensors in the brain trigger an involuntary breath whether he's underwater or not. That is called the "break point"; laboratory experiments have shown the break point to come after eighty-seven seconds. It's a sort of neurological optimism, as if the body were saying, Holding our breath is killing us, and breathing in might not kill us, so we might as well breathe in...Until the break point, a drowning person is said to be undergoing "voluntary apnea," choosing not to breathe. Lack of oxygen to the brain causes a sensation of darkness closing in from all sides, as in a camera aperture stopping down. The panic of a drowning person is mixed with an odd incredulity that this is actually happening. Having never done it before, the body--and the mind--do not know how to die gracefully. The process is filled with desperation and awkwardness. 'So this is drowning,' a drowning person might think. 'So this is how my life finally ends.'"

TIL "drowning" does not necessarily imply death.
While the word "drowning" is commonly associated with fatal results, drowning may be classified into three different types: drowning that results in death, drowning that results in long-lasting health problems, and drowning that results in no health complications.[10] Sometimes the term "near-drowning" is used in the latter cases.

Streets of fire is awesome.
bonus points if you can name the actress who plays the sister AND you can name what she's most famous for without looking it up.

I've never seen Streets of Fire but it looks like Walter Hill wanted another shot at The Warriors without his comic panel transitions edited out.

saw an ad for this. it looks interesting enough

…until you look up the history
Against a military unit with decidedly superior weaponry and a longer bayonet, however, the Dahomey Amazons could not prevail.[12] During a battle with French soldiers at Adegon on 6 October during the second war, the bulk of the Amazon corps were wiped out in a matter of hours in hand-to-hand combat after the French engaged them with a bayonet charge.[19] The Dahomey lost 86 regulars and 417 Dahomey Amazons, with nearly all of those deaths being inflicted by bayonets; the French lost 6 soldiers.[20

I’m curious to see where the movie goes now. Historically this conflict feels similar to Zulu, with the European military technology being in a completely different league. There were 2 wars between the French and the Dahomey and the casualties for both sides are incomparable. The French lost 10s of people and the Dahomey lost 1000s. While the story is interesting I’m just not sure how they end it (either they stay accurate to history and it’s depressing or they pull a Tarantino and fictionalize history)

Hear me out: what if instead of an Ocean's 11 prequel, you make an entirely original heist movie. That'd be fun. I know why. It's money. It's always money.

Speaking of spinoffs, one of the Cobra Kai showrunners is writing a Ferris Bueller's Day Off spinoff that follows the two unnamed valets that run the mileage up on Cameron's dad's Ferrari. Uh, OK.
