I really do love the first 45 minutes or so. It’s been a while so I can’t remember exactly where it turns but the jungle chase certainly stands out as a huge misstep. I don’t mind the macguffin at all, I don’t mind Shia, I actually like the fridge nuke, and I don’t mind the villain either. The execution is just so poor and its almost like Spielberg forgot what made those Indy movies so much fun. Hint: it wasn’t the digital effects.

Hell yeah.'Top Gun: Maverick' Sets August 23rd Digital Release Date; November 1st on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray - 110 Minutes of Bonus Content
With the upcoming release of Top Gun: Maverick, audiences will be treated to over 110 minutes of bonus content, including behind-the-scenes moments with the filmmakers as they capture the spectacular aerial sequences, push the limits beyond Mach-10, and of course, you'll be able to watch the cast's intense flight training program that got them in shape for some of the insanely cool moments in the film.

That's a long delay between digital and physical releases.

Yeah, that was my first thought, as well. I guess maybe they think they can increase their revenue by spreading that out?

That's lame as hell. I'll wait for the physical disk though.

In other lame news, Avatar has been removed from Disney+ as it's being rereleased in theaters. Score another point for physical media. All this will do is piss off the people who had a casual interest in the sequel and wanted to watch the original first, aka me. The people who would actually pay to go see the first one in theaters again will still do so and I doubt this adds any significant numbers to that group of dummies.

speaking of Top Gun Maverick......my SO hasn't seen it so we're going to see on Saturday in the theater. I saw it in June in a regular theater. if I'm going again it's going to be in one of the better formats.
my question: what's the difference between IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, and Dolby Cinema?

IMAX=Big boy screen, 4DX=seat shaking/strobe lighting gimmicky nonsense, ScreenX=the walls next to the screen are now the screen too gimmicky nonsense, Dolby=great audio, better contrast, higher resolution, smaller screen than IMAX.

I saw Maverick in ScreenX and really enjoyed it. It was reasonably priced compared to IMAX.

I've been really bad at only upgrading the 4k collection based on specific movies and have just been buying up all kinds of ****
Robocop, mummy collection, limey, real genius, army of darkness, the fog, godfather trilogy, last night in Soho, Lawrence of Arabia, back to the beach, everything everywhere all at once, out of sight , Northman, Jurassic world dominion, true romance and legend.
That's in the last month and I've only watched two of them.

Dolby Cinema is exclusive to AMC, but it's the only one of the systems that I think offers for-real benefits that are worth seeking out. The others are, for narrative content, gimmicky screen and/or sound marketing exercises a la 3D. They're just stupid imo and kill audience immersion rather than enhance it.

I donated blood platelets yesterday and watched all of Michael Clayton for the first time during it
Ocean’s 11 is by far and away my favorite Clooney movie but Clayton has his best pure acting performance that I’ve seen. He shows exquisite range

O Brother is my favorite. But man, those Ocean's films are fun. 3 Kings is good too.

3 Kings has a lot of favor in my cinephile heart. We just watched it recently (Mrs Tif's first viewing), and I was glad how well it held up.

I love O Brother as a movie but I am not a huge fan of his performance just because the funkiness of the movie. I’m not saying he’s bad but it’s really hard to judge it

I pretty much like him in all his movies. Out of sight and Roseanne are both great.

Same eddy. The only bad one that comes to mind is the stupid Netflix movie about living in Alaska or something with his daughter. Intolerable Cruelty was also a tough watch

Speaking of Wolfgang Petersen and George Clooney, I wonder if The Perfect Storm holds up? I remember liking it back when it came out...22 years ago (!!!)

I have a soft spot for Perfect Storm even though I know it's not a great movie. Great ensemble cast with Clooney, Marky Mark, John C Reilly, Diane Lane, John Hawkes, and an unexpected Karen Allen role.

We posted this at the same time. It doesn't hold up great to be honest and I think it's because it's not really sure what it wants to be. It's a love story, a redemption story, and a disaster film all in one so it's sort of all over the place. The late 90s/early 2000s really loved disaster stories.Speaking of Wolfgang Petersen and George Clooney, I wonder if The Perfect Storm holds up? I loved The Perfect Storm as well. Pretty much anything with Diane Lane I'll watch at least once.
