Also left out of the above (at least on the surface):

The 98 year old co-owner of the newspaper died of a heart attack the day after the raid because of how badly she was distressed by the whole ordeal.

This kambumfuq Kansas newspaper story is going to get real weird real quick
I agree there's probably a whole lot of small-town shenanigans going on behind the scenes. The police chief raiding a newspaper that was investigating his prior misconduct stinks to high heaven, and I bet there's more police misconduct to find.

According to the attorney general's office, off-duty Trooper Michael Brown attempted to pass a vehicle illegally on Route 6 across double yellow lines. It happened in Sullivan Township on February 11, 2023.

Brown's vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle, killing the driver, Christine Woodward.

Brown was on his way to work at his barracks in Tioga County.

Brown is charged with a felony count of homicide by vehicle and five related summary traffic violations. He turned himself in Monday afternoon. Bail was set at $50,000.

Interesting. My understanding is the double lines are not actually actionable unless they're accompanied by Do Not Pass signage. That could be the "illegally" part. I would be curious to know the full circumstances.

Or I could just look up the law, meh.

A grim reminder that the rates of domestic violence for police officers are way above the population in general; multiple studies have found that at least 40% of police families experience domestic violence, in contrast to 10% of families in the general population. Cops not only like to beat up people in general, they like to beat up their spouses.

But there is more to this story than a small town writing a bunch of speeding tickets. KHOU 11 Investigates discovered Coffee City is a magnet for troubled cops. More than half of the department’s 50 officers had been suspended, demoted, terminated or dishonorably discharged from their previous law enforcement jobs, according to personnel files obtained through open records requests to other law enforcement agencies.

Those prior disciplinary actions range from excessive force, public drunkenness, untruthfulness and association with known criminals. They include:

An officer terminated for posting a Facebook message to a citizen: “You should kill yourself, do the world a favor.”
An officer suspended for smashing a window and entering his girlfriend’s home without consent.
A deputy constable suspended after a burglary victim’s laptop computer was found in his home.
A deputy constable terminated for tackling a non-resisting citizen to the ground during a traffic stop.
A deputy sheriff terminated for slapping a handcuffed inmate without provocation.
Two officers terminated for lying on their job applications.
. . .
The records also reveal at least a dozen Coffee City officers who found themselves on the wrong side of the law. Their criminal charges include official oppression, family violence, theft, DWI, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, harassment and endangering a child.

Probably the taxpayers. Even if the police pay, their department will probably reimburse them.

A Maryland police officer was suspended after a bystander recorded video of him embracing a woman and entering the back seat of his patrol vehicle with her at a public park, officials announced Tuesday.

Video caught the uniformed Prince George's County officer entering his cruiser with the woman at Southlawn Park in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Oxon Hill on Monday.

Nelson Ochoa, who recorded the video, told NBC Washington that the officer and the woman were in the back seat for 30 to 40 minutes before they went their separate ways.

“We couldn’t believe what we were seeing, and what really made us go, wow, this is crazy is when the car started rocking a little bit to the left and right," Ochoa said. "That’s when we were, like, this is crazy. In broad daylight with kids around."

The Prince George's County Police Department said Tuesday that it was aware of the video and that the officer had been identified and that he had been suspended pending an investigation.

NBC Washington identified the officer as Francesco Marlett, who was previously accused of abusing a former girlfriend's child in a 2016 case. The charges were dropped, the station reported.

A representative for the police department confirmed Marlett's identity to NBC News on Wednesday and said he is the same officer involved in the 2016 case.

A voicemail left for Marlett was not immediately returned. The Fraternal Order of Police representing the Prince George's County Police did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Newly-released bodycam footage shows a Seattle police officer audibly laughing and joking on a phone call the day after an incident where a fellow officer had hit and killed a pedestrian with their patrol car.

The officer on the call is identified as Seattle Police Officers’ Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer. In it, Auderer can be heard speaking to SPOG President Mike Solan, as he talked about the incident where 23-year-old exchange student Jaahnavi Kandula was fatally hit by Officer Kevin Dave.

Shortly after saying “she’s dead,” Auderer laughs and says “it’s a regular person,” referring to Kandula. He then says “just write a check -- $11,000, she was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”

On the second episode of the Telemarketers docuseries

1. Cops are straight crooks

2. This scam they run on us (the country at large) is so patently simple, says as much about us as them. Literally all they have to do to raise money is just have scammers call people and tell them they’re supporting cops.

First the police lied about how Timpa died, and they refused to release the body cameras. Timpa's mother sued, and it took three years of litigation before a court ordered the police to release the videos. Then the police asserted qualified immunity. The district court initially ruled for the police, and it took additional years of litigation before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit reversed and rejected qualified immunity.

A follow-up on this: Police chief fired, department temporarily disbanded until all new officers can be hired. The reports from KHOU in Houston compiled in this video revealed even more shenanigans, including multiple "full time" cops who didn't even work in Coffee City and whose pay structure was illegal. The chief also had an outstanding DUI from Florida.
