As of Oct. 13, Garrett police officers are no longer allowed to conduct criminal investigations, according to a letter from [DeKalb County Prosecutor Neal Blythe] sent to Fiandt, Garrett Police Chief Gerald Kline and municipal attorney Darrick Brinkerhoff. Kline has been the police chief for under a year and a half, Fiandt said Tuesday during a sit-down interview in his office.

“I am extremely concerned about the safety of the citizens of Garrett as we wait for the full state police investigation to be completed,” Blythe wrote.

Fiandt said Garrett officers are still allowed to issue traffic citations and things of that nature, but any call that requires a criminal investigation will have to be turned over to the Indiana State Police, the Auburn Police Department or the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.

In his letter, Blythe said he had reached out to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) and the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council and “decided our office will not be filing any new criminal case that is investigated by any member of the Garrett Police Department.”

This one isn't too much hate... more impressive that the cops were able to do this without laughing their ass off.

A Pennsylvania State Police trooper is facing charges after he drove a department vehicle while intoxicated, according to a press release.

PSP's Communications Office confirmed that on Nov. 20, a supervisor found Trooper Justin Dilbert to be intoxicated during a shift at the McConnellsburg station in Fulton County.

Dilbert, who has worked with PSP since February of 2021, was placed on restricted duty as a result.

He is facing charges for DUI.

Henderson Police Chief Hollie Chadwick has cleared the disciplinary record of a police detective accused of hurling a racial slur and urging the killing of Mexicans and Black Lives Matter protesters, a Las Vegas Review-Journal investigation found.

Detective Kevin LaPeer broke department policies a dozen times, including ones that ban workplace harassment or discrimination, untruthfulness and prejudice, according to a December 2022 finding by Deputy Chief of Police Itzhak Henn.

But Henn reversed some of his decisions after Chadwick decided that officers won’t face punishment for multiple policy violations that stem from the same incident.

Chadwick later dismissed LaPeer’s three remaining and less serious violations — two regarding workplace professionalism and another for attitude and demeanor — earlier this year, city records show. LaPeer was on suspension for 17 months while the city investigated the allegations and was paid over $135,000 in salary during that time.

Chadwick, a longtime Henderson officer who was appointed chief in May, has publicly said her department does not have racists within its ranks, but she refused repeated requests by the Review-Journal to discuss LaPeer’s discipline. She fled when a reporter tried to question
her at a public event last month.

This is another example of why the "it's just a few bad apples" line is so contemptable.

Let's say only 1% of officers face severe discipline issues. But if 80% of the others - including their whole chain of command - go out of their way to cover up and grease wheels and shield that small population............ that is, as they say, a distinction without difference. Accomplice after the fact, to put it in their terms.

On that subject, here's a case from The Civil Rights Lawyer. Off-duty Bluefield, WV cop learns that his girlfriend/baby momma is drinking with other men at a local bar. He goes to the bar, gets into a fight, and starts a shootout, and when other cops from the Bluefield police department show up, the off-duty cop both assaults/resists them and assaults other people in front of them, including the bar's owner. It was all observed by multiple eyewitnesses and was captured on video from multiple cameras. The cop was arrested and charged, right? Of course not. The only person who has experienced any repercussions is the bar owner, who lost his liquor license for a year after the Bluefield cops reported (almost certainly as an act of retaliation) that there had been a "shooting" at the bar. Did the Bluefield cops report that it was one of their own that did the shooting? Again, of course not. The Civil Rights Lawyer is representing that bar owner in a civil-rights lawsuit.

If we have 100 cops who all follow the law to the letter, but none of those 100 cops would stop, report, or arrest a fellow cop for blatant criminal acts because they all follow the Blue Wall of Silence, then we have 101 bad cops.

Man is arrested for DUI in Loveland, CO, even though he blew 0.0 on a breathalyzer and a blood test was negative for all tested substances. He sues. The lawsuit reveals that the local cops had "contests" to see who had the most DUI arrests, to the point where cops would prioritize DUI calls over other calls so that they could get more "points." Whoa. Settled for $400,000. The police chief and the arresting officer both resign before they could be investigated / disciplined, which means there are no strikes on their records that would prevent them from just going to work for the department in the next town over.

Or presumably even get rehired at LPD.

Also the attorney representing that plaintiff has like 4 or 5 other clients with similar complaints against other local PDs that are actively being litigated. (Not sure if that's in the video or not, haven't watched)

Every appeals court that has considered the question has held that flipping off the police is protected by the First Amendment, and that includes the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, which covers Vermont. But that doesn't stop thin-skinned cops from arresting people for what amounts to butthurt.

Yet another "sober man arrested for DUI case," this time because the cops allegedly needed to justify their overtime.

An officer with the Tyrone Police Department was placed on paid administrative leave after crashing into a ditch and allegedly having a blood alcohol content three times over the legal limit.

State Police reported that on Nov. 24, at around 8:10 p.m., they were called to a single-vehicle crash near Bickel’s Surplus on Old 6th Avenue. When arriving, they said that 42-year-old Otto “Gil” Barton III was standing outside of his truck, which was in a ditch.

According to the criminal complaint, Barton said he swerved to miss a deer and ended up in the ditch. Police noted they smelled alcohol while talking with him and he claimed he had three or four beers. Troopers said his eyes were glassy, his speech was thick and slurred, and that he failed a standard field sobriety test. Barton agreed to a blood test.

The complaint shows that Barton’s blood alcohol content came back at .256%, more than three times the legal limit of .08.

Barton was charged with DUI and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.

Tyrone Police Chief Jessica Walk told WTAJ that Barton is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this case.

An investigation by The New York Times and the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting finds that there is basically no oversight for a host of forms of police misconduct.

A post earlier up this page links a Reason article about Jonathan David Hankins, who was buried in an unmarked grave by police in Jackson, Mississippi without notifying his family even though the police had identified him and his mother had reported him missing. Well, it looks like the police in Jackson, Mississippi have done this hundreds of times.

A red Mazda sped past a police officer’s unmarked car stationed at a tree-lined Staten Island intersection. The officer inside, Mathew Bianchi, clocked the Mazda at well over the limit and prepared to make a stop at a nearby streetlight. But the car blew through a red light. Bianchi turned on his siren.

Behind the wheel was a woman in her late teens or early 20s. As Bianchi began to explain why he had stopped her, she handed him a card.

The police unions distribute the wallet-sized courtesy cards — sometimes referred to as “get out of jail free” cards — to members, who in turn pass them out to friends and family. Bianchi had been instructed to let card carriers off without a ticket.

By the time he pulled over the Mazda in November 2018, drivers were handing Bianchi these cards six or seven times a day. But this woman’s card was a little older, a little tattered-looking. It was difficult to make out the contact information of the officer who had given it to her, which is usually written on the card’s back. So Bianchi did the wrong thing, which is to say, the right thing: He wrote the woman a ticket.
. . .
The month after he stopped the Mazda, a high-ranking police union official, Albert Acierno, got in touch. He told Bianchi that the cards were inviolable. He then delivered what Bianchi came to think of as the “brother speech,” saying that cops are brothers and must help each other out. That the cards were symbols of the bonds between the police and their extended family and friends.

The "thin blue line" is the line between cops (and their families and buddies) on one side and everyone else on the other side. And cops have been trained that there is no higher priority than their side.

I had heard about those hall pass cards from cops, but I didn't think they were actually real. That's such a basic petty power trip.
