I have the Blu and DVDs with all the extra features I need. I got the bare bones 4k and digital set. I can't imagine it being a different movie from the extended editions now.

I usually rewatch the Lord of the Rings on Thanksgiving, and "Return of the King" has my favorite back-to-back scenes in the trilogy.

As Aragorn bows we then see the four Hobbits return to the Shire and an old lady looks on them and shakes her head at boys she knows to be troublemakers.

Humility and honor.
Is it an old lady or an old man? Always had trouble telling.
I just assume it was a woman.

Nice seeing John Rhys-Davies, he's looking good for 76.

Call me cynical, but why are all of these wealthy people looking to fans to raise $6 million? You trying to tell me the cast of LOTR can't easily come up with 6 mill?

Cynical

Edit: To clarify, I don't look at it as "They're rich, they can compile the dough to pull this off amongst themselves!" I look at it as, "Wow, I can be a part of the effort that preserves the actual Tolkien residence as an historical landmark."

Yeah, I'm cynical for sure. Rich people asking for money reminds me of BP and Shell telling people to go green and save the environment.

As is almost always the case with these things, by the time I am aware they exist, they are sold out.

I like the gold halo around Frodo. Very Middle Ages art-ish.

And by 'gold halo' you obviously mean "'Eye Of Sauron', the embodiment of absolute evil in the Third Age of Arda in Middle-earth".

Hah...yes, of course. But at first glance it definitely gives you one of these vibes, which I'm sure is the inspiration (albeit a totally opposite meaning)

I know we're mostly physical media people here, but the Middle Earth 4K collection is only $39.99 on iTunes right now. Normally $89.99

Finished the trilogy with rotk last night. I'm truly amazed at how good these 4k discs were. The production and details that went into these movies are astonishing and it's incredible how much better they show with these discs. The practical fx are jaw dropping and work so well with the cgi. It really was like watching these for the first time again.

@tifosi77 have any cool production stories about these? Always enjoy a good yarn from you

Eddy, curious question because I got the 4k for Christmas too. The one complaint I heard was that the remastering in 4k took away from some of the signature "grittiness" that was a part of the original trilogy. Wondering if you noticed that at all

I can see what they are saying with that, but imo it doesn't take you out of the movie because everything looks so good. The cgi definitely stands out, but it's all blended together so incredibly well that if anything for me, it just made everything so much holy **** I can't believe they did this. The details you see in everything now makes it a completely new viewing experience. I guess that's the trade-off with 4k. It's not just that though, the color correction and HDR are stunning. More so than the video, the new atmos sound completely destroys. I was knocking off picture frames upstairs from cranking this. It's magnificent.

You can definitely see the advantage of remastering the fx in 4k, if they didn't do that, it would have looked so bizarre. They did this the right way.
