Did you see that there is a Tolkien bio-pic coming out? Nicholas Hoult as Tolkien.

I did. The initial teaser didn't really do anything for me, but the full trailer that was just released this week gave me goose bumps.

after going down a hole yesterday, I came to this story and it's terrific. I know everyone isn't sold on Chris finishing up his old mans work, but I thoroughly enjoyed Children of Hurin and there was a lot of crossover here. Geez, this could be it's own show or movie

Well, it was his corruption that lead to the assault on Valinor. So I would have to think so.

What I do not remember, and I am loath to look it up, is whether or not during his captivity by the Númenóreans if he had taken the form of Annatar, or if that was just when he deceived the Noldor Elves into making the Rings of Power. Like, did they know he was Sauron all along.

The Three Rings of the Elves were forged by Celebrimbor alone, and were never touched by Sauron. They were made last, however, and their forging involved some of the arts taught by "Annatar"

Most significant was the war the Númenóreans waged on the Valar, which lead to the changing of Arda from a disk to a round planet, and the establishment of Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth; the forging of the Rings of Power and the One Ring; and then it was the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, which is depicted in the prologue of the FOTR movie. (If I'm not mistaken, it was this and the attendant loss of the Ring of Power that closed out the Second Age.)

This thread is already way nerdier than I would've imagined in my wildest dreams.

My favorite story is after we introduced the kids to the lotr movies, we bought them a ring replica on a chain and made them recite the great rings verse before they were allowed to play. The next day all 3 we're beating the hell out of each other trying to be the one who holds it. Wife and I looked at each other and said it's real

Did you... you made them recite it in Black Speech, didn't you.

Up until now, the only books I had ever read were the Trilogy. I am about halfway through The Hobbit now and loving it.

Thinking about re-reading the original trilogy. It's been a loooong time since I read them.

Thanks for the req. I've also been thinking about rereading the books. Good to hear they picked a noteworthy reader for the stories. It makes a huge difference.

I would also recommend The Silmarillion as read by Martin Shaw. I have it on CDs (!) and have listened to it perhaps a dozen times on road trips over the years.

One of the things that gets me about Tolkien and a lot of fantasy is that the civilizations don't really advance technologically. I mean the Númenóreans were the smartest, most advance civilization of Men in the world for nearly 3500 years, yet they never developed gunpowder? Or steam engines? Or the internal combustion engine? Or flight? Or computers? Other fantasy authors go the same route (probably because of Tolkien's influence) and it bugs me.

Elves were of course around for much longer, but they deliberately eschewed technology, preferring to live in accord with nature, so I'll give them a pass. But Men?

I presume it's because Tolkien himself hated modern technology, having seen firsthand the dark, satanic mills of industrialization and the horrors of the (inevitable) First World War.

I've never done the audio book route. I've thought about it many times at work, but feel like I need to focus for something like Tolkien audio?

I only listen to them on long road trips. Focus-friendly.

I've tried listening to audio books at work. Unless your job involves listening to audio books or driving cars, it's near impossible to pay attention to the book and whatever work you are doing.
