bay leaves…are we sure they’re not a racket by Big Bay Leaf by having convinced chefs that you cook with them but then remove them? I say this, potentially outing myself as a tasteless serf, but I honestly don’t know if I could recognize if a dish has bay leaf in it or not. I don’t even know if I know what bay leaf tastes like

I can absolutely taste bay leaf and consider them essential for certain dishes.

What happens at a business when a credit card charge is disputed?
Background: I put a deposit on a car. I didn't sign anything, they said it was refundable, it was just to hold the car until I got there to purchase it. I decided I wanted a different car and now they're dragging their feet on refunding me. I get it, it's not a priority for them. It is for me. I've been trying to get on the phone with the guy to get it done since Wednesday and now I'm considering just hopping online and disputing the charge with my credit card company. I just don't know what happens on the other end. Do they get in trouble in some way or does nothing happen to them?

Did you dispute with the merchant and the cc company?

Sounds like he hasn't disputed the charge yet.

If it rarely happens then nothing bad will happen to them. If the card processor sees it as a trend their processing rates will be raised. Might be worth asking for a manager and explaining that you don't want to do a chargeback, but you will on a certain day if it is not resolved.
Most places take that very seriously, but I don't know how much of a car dealer's business is done on credit cards. Raising processing rates would devastate an online retailer or a coffee shop, for instance.

I've asked for a refund and they said they'd process a refund, called a few times to get them to process it, they're dragging their feet for whatever reason. Haven't done anything with the cc company yet.

Tell the dealership you're going to dispute the charge. If that doesn't get them moving, follow through with it.

He's already called a few times, and IMO has done his part. I'd be filing the dispute with my credit card company today, at this point.

I advised him to cooperate a little longer just because I've had some disputes that I thought I was dead in the right come back as unable to be reversed. If you play that card and it doesn't go right for you the car dealer has no reason to help you as your next step is small claims court.

It's the end of the month. Is there an accounting reason they might be trying to keep the revenue (or 'revenue') on the books for another few days?

A down deposit shouldn't even touch the income statement until the sale is complete, unless it's nonrefundable.

Probably a cash flow issue if it's an intentional accounting thing

Dealerships with cashflow issues? Most likely something that we are all experiencing: not enough grunts to do the grunt work, so it's pawned off on somebody else who has higher priorities.

Side note: I miss going into a dealership and walking out with a new car. Our last two cars we've had to put deposits down on vehicles that haven't even been built yet. I put a deposit down two weeks ago and they expect the car to arrive in November.

I played around with pricing out a hybrid Ford F150 yesterday. Came to about $55k. Today I figured to find something cheaper used. Couldn't find anything below $60k.
Imma sit this out for a while.

I’m watching a show called Engineering Catastrophes on some obscure cable channel called Science Channel. They’re talking about the Museum Tower in Dallas (the building reflects sun really annoyingly because it’s curved and all glass) and the difficulty of building in Netherlands (the soil is sandy so they had to build really sketchy support systems)
anyway, it’s one of those science shows that interview experts. And one of the experts’ profession, as it says under her name, is “Neuroscientist”. I don’t mean to question her knowledge on he subject but they couldn’t get someone with a physics or engineering profession?
how the hell do people get selected for these shows anyway? how do I become the hot take science specialist for that eventual tv show?

I've seen that show and had the exact same questions.

Engineering Catastrophes is one of my Saturday morning shows. I've got a season pass for it, and love it.
