It's something like use a reliever to start the game so that your starter can get you to your late innings guys by just going five.

Stats show when you face a hitter three times in a game you're less effective. So if you're not starting a top caliber starter, maybe just use many mid tier pitchers a few innings each. It's why team bullpen era is always better than team starter era. It's like the shift and batting your picture 8th and your best hitter 2nd or 4th etc. Data fighting tradition

I despise MLB scoring rules. A win is the last thing Brault deserves.

Just saw that the padres pulled their ace out of the game today, and now have to do a bullpen game. And that’s after basically doing a bp game yesterday. So, hopefully Musgrove doesn’t bomb and they could take this series against the Padres.

I predicted this road trip to be a disaster and they’ve already won six games, so there’s that. Problems in the staff abound though, it would be nice if they aggressively pursued a starting pitcher because they do at least seem to have guys to plug into the bullpen.

Very strange season to say the least. Pythagorean win-loss (which I admit I know very little about it) indicates this team should be 18-26 but instead it is 24-20.

-Elias diaz has 1 double and 2 walks in 55 plate appearances. I wonder if he has any lingering problems with his illness/virus

-adam frazier is somehow has the second best WAR for position players despite his 668 OPS.

Guys with 30 or more at bats with OPS less than 600:

Cervelli
Tucker
Jung Ho
Erik Gonzalez
JB Shuck
Elias Diaz

Jason martin and Pablo rayes had 35 and 39 at bats respectively and have ops of 319 and 575

I don't have the energy to talk about the pitching staff

Their current performance honestly seems like a baseball miracle. When they had excellent pitching they had no hitting and now that they have all kinds of hitting they no longer have a starting rotation, yet they keep on trucking. It seems inevitable that reality will set in at some point, but as long as Bell, Melky, Polanco, and hell even Reynolds keep on keeping on it feels like they'll always have a shot to outscore the other team.

Say Reynolds does what he's been doing for a few more weeks. What happens when Dickerson comes back? Trade bait? Roll with 4 good OF (3 LH) for a bit because Polanco will be down sooner or later?

The four OF rotation due to Meadows last year seemed to screw everyone up. I think you petition the NL for the immediate implementation of the DH after the All Star break and roll with it that way.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/josh-bell-now-with-power/

Fangraphs finally tackles Bell's absurd start to the season. They seem to be attributing it to Bell maintaining a consistent stance from the left side. The interesting part I think is that, he was more or less a complete mess as a LH Hitter, but had so much natural talent with the bat, that he could be competent while being a mess at the plate. So now that a consistent stance at the plate has helped his timing, he is barreling more balls and just mashing the ball all over the place.

I think the overall picture to me, is that an offense can be top heavy. If you have a guy doing what Bell is doing, you can generally plug the other holes with defense first guys. It's actually beneficial in that they can give Tucker this extended look while not really caring at all what he does at the plate.

Cervelli and Diaz are better than what they are showing. Kang is washed up and he'll be cut soon, they can live with another year of Moran, but it would be pretty easy to see that as a spot to upgrade.

The real concern obviously is the rotation. They can probably plug the holes in the bullpen by rotating guys back and forth from Indy, but if they don't do anything about the rotation soon and are stuck with Kingham and Brault, the arms of all their regular bullpen pitchers are going to fall off.
