Lyles is bad again, though that could have been him trying to power through a hamstring issue. Williams was a 2nd round pick, so there was some pedigree, but he did go from serviceable to pretty good, so that's a consideration. Happ could have just been the benefit of moving from the AL to the NL. Nova was definitely the AL to NL bump as he sucked as soon as NL batters realized he was gonna groove everything through the strike zone, which was about May of 2017. He definitely got the most out of Nicasio in 2017 but his 2016 was less than stellar, primarily due to the cheap front office deciding to use him as a starter. I could give Ray that one though.

Regardless, yea it's a pretty thankless job as he's been given a bunch of crap no one else wants, but when they've had some talented pitchers roll through (Morton, Cole, Glasnow) they didn't know what the hell to do with them. I don't think that's all on Ray though. The franchise's philosophy on pitching sucks, which is the bigger issue.

Searage has done a good job imo. As far as cole goes, i put 75% on cole for being a malcontent who wanted to be paid like an ace but pitched like just a guy. the other 25% is on the staff for doing whatever it is they did with him. as far as glasnow goes, who the hell knows.

Charlie Morton doesn't bother me because without searage, Morton would have been out of the league by the end of 2010

They seem to have a model that mostly takes pretty crap pitchers and makes them mediocre, but also takes really good pitchers and makes them mediocre. And then there's glasnow, where someone needs to be fired.

that is why their business model sucks and the brewers model doesn't. pirates would never take a chance on a yellich type guy because they just dont. and if they did, it wouldn't pan out, because it never does.

Which ultimately is my frustration, they talk about having a deep farm system but have such a hard time developing any positional talent, it's insane.

Trade Melky now, get Dickerson playing time, then trade him at the deadline if he can be had for something.

Wonder how attendance is doing, they're heading into the time of the year where they see growth, but with pitching as bad at is, they're certainly not in it.

Trade them both. Trade Bell, trade Marte, trade Polanco. These dipshits aren't ever gonna get it right while any of the above are still under contract here

I would trade everyone but Bell, but they're gonna need to trade Bell anyways.

22nd out of 30.

But they're up 1,221 per game from this point last year (31 home games). One of 12 teams to be trending upward.

Of course they're trying to force Dickerson on teams instead of Melky. One guy is making $1.15MM and the other is making $8.5MM. You don't want to jump at the first offer you receive, but getting anything out of Melky AND being able to turn him into a trade return is one of the nice surprises of the season. I fully expect the Pirates to **** this up and have Melky and Dickerson on the roster after the trade deadline.

"There’s a lot of issues that we need to solve, but we need to solve them with the players that we have in the organization," Coonelly said. "Our depth has clearly been tested. We haven’t been able to bring up players who can get the job done.”
That's pretty early this time of year.

To be fair, that is a fact.

It would be pretty short sighted to start dumping prospects to try and pry whatever competent arms that teams like the Marlins and Royals have.

I'm fine with what he said in that regard, but then to follow it up with, the guys we've brought up aren't cutting it, makes little sense, imo.

The Pirates deserve no sympathy, they've put themselves in this position, and the media tour both of these turds are doing is continuing to be a laughable situation.

Oh yeah. No sympathy from me. I spent the offseason shrugging off people's distress over the pitching depth. I assumed that because they were handing the keys over to Kingham and Brault that those two could get the job done. I also thought that Kela and Rodriguez would be good. But I am not a scout, I just look at box scores, this is on the front office and the coaching staff, teams with probably far less talented pitchers get better results, and for this organization to believe that they could win with a staff of young pitchers occupying roles everywhere, they have to back those decisions up with results. And they keep pointing at injuries, and that's BS because this all on cheap organization players being handed key roles out of ST all getting bombed. They have to spend the rest of the year hopefully identifying someone that can be good enough to have a role in 2020.

I think a few of the teams they've faced (Dodgers, Rangers, Phillies etc) fans travel well.

As expected. Honestly, he could use a night off. We'll see what becomes on the nights to follow.
