Yep, same reason Moncrief was brought in. None of these guys really excite you, but if they can keep the seat warm while Washington (hopefully) takes a big step this year, the WR situation may not be too dire.

And with all the work the defense still needs, I generally don't like the idea of drafting a WR much higher than say the 3rd round, especially when they used a 2nd on Washington last year.

Steelers ILB L.J. Fort signs a three-year deal with the Eagles that can reach up to $10 million with playing time incentives, according to a source. The deal includes $1.9 million in guarantees. Steelers made efforts to keep him but he had other suitors.
Haha, we finally get to drop him, AND he goes to the Eagles. This is a win/win.
Damn it. Gonna have to find another white ILB to cover the opposition’s top receiver.

I've read lamenting by some fans saying that Fort was our best coverage LBer. Even if that's true, we're not losing much.

I didn't realize the Moncrief news was official. I really like him.

He was, but that was largely due to Shazier becoming crippled, Bostic being terrible, and Williams having the speed of a DT.

SI wrote an anti-Big Ben article with this headline, "The Big Ben Problem in Pittsburgh, According to Two Ex-Steelers", using nonsense comments from Josh Harris and these nonsense quotes from Ike Redman:
Isaac Redman, who played five seasons in Pittsburgh (2009-13), agreed with Harris.

“He does have a lot of power in that team, and some guys like AB may feel like they should be on a different level, that Ben shouldn’t be criticizing him publicly,” Redman says. “When you just only see the guy in the locker room and on the field and you get to a radio show and you say something bad, it’s going to rub guys the wrong way. Some stuff should be kept in house. You come to them, you don’t put it out in the public. When you do that, you open yourself up to criticism.”

Redman says during his time in Pittsburgh, Roethlisberger’s disconnect with teammates was in stark contrast with his veteran backup, Charlie Batch, who organized an annual spring bash for teammates, flew in a favorite masseuse from his time in Detroit and invited players to his home to utilize him for free, and consistently drew large numbers of Steelers at his charity events in and around the city. Roethlisberger, meanwhile, was once not voted team captain.

“I think everybody has different personalities,” Redman says. “Could he have done more to bring guys together? Yes, but he was never a problem in the locker room. I don’t think he shied away from guys, I just think he was really careful about who he surrounded himself with.”
Redman on the Twitter's:
@ired33

I was called for an interview and was asked why do I think some players are saying negative things about Ben. My response was I’ve never had an issue with him some guys are closer than others. I think Ben is just careful with who he surrounds himself with.

I can’t believe an article would come out saying i had anything negative to say about Ben Bc i do not. He was always a great teammate and leader my time in Pittsburgh!!
I hope all these national media dinks are forced to cover the AAF.

Steelers signed ILB Mark Barron to a two year, $12MM deal. Per PFF ratings last season was his worst since his rookie year, but none of his grades are particularly high. He's only about 6'2", 230 lbs., but is a converted safety and should conceivably help in pass coverage or serve as a nickel replacement for Morgan Burnett, who I would expect to be a post-June 1st cut.

Draft analysis from current Raiders GM Mike Mayock after the Bucs took Barron with the 7th pick in the 2012 draft:
"Boy, is this a solid pick. I love this kid because his floor and ceiling are the same thing. His ceiling is to be a Pro Bowl safety; his floor is to be a Pro Bowl safety. That's how good this young man is. This is going to be a good football team next year."
Barron has never made a Pro Bowl at either position.

There is a CBS article that broke this down pretty well. Basically a short term Shazier replacement. A guy that will act as a band aid but is just 'meh' across the board.

Sounds like the title of a book on the recent Steelers.

The thing worth remembering with Barron is that despite his history of meh-ness, dude needs to make a Pro Bowl at some point.

maybe i looked it up wrong but i saw the steelers rush d and pass d were both top ten last year...

overall the D was meh but not worse than that. amazing to lead the league in sacks but be at the near bottom in INTs. also had the most penalties and penalty yards

The defense by and large wasn't half bad from what I remember. They just had a penchant for turning into a Big XII defense in the last two minutes of each half

The Steelers' D last year was good, on paper; situationally, they were awful.

On paper, they had a decent 3rd down defense.... but they gave up a lot of big yardage plays on 1st or 2nd, so they weren't always 'holding' teams to 3rd. On paper, they had a decent Red Zone D.... but they gave up something like the 3rd most scores from outside the RZ.

I forget the exact numbers, but it was stuff like that that routinely killed them.
