Athletic article pre-paywall said this was from NYE 2017.

He was only fined the equivalent of about $1500

Random thoughts

I always thought Cole would be better but that I'd love Taillon more. Look for him to start strong and be an allstar. The full pitching staff is pretty strong. Williams could cement himself as a number 2 with another great year.

It would be so helpful to be a good defensive team. And man I wish we were smarter and could run the bases well.

I think marte could have a career year. And who knows maybe offensively bell and polanco. It's a pretty exciting team with chances to be great. I worry there could be a big dropoff in catcher production. Doubt diaz's bat is real.

Lots of older AAA guys that have maybe their last chance to break into the show. Im rooting hard for luplow or osuna especially the former. Or Kramer. I have a feeling we should keep lavarnway. I'd bank on his bat over Diaz

I'm hoping that lulow and osuna are spending a lot of time working on launch angle or something. they have raw power but haven't shown enough in the chances they have gotten thus far

So the issue with 2018 was that they entered the year with a substantial question marks on pitching, defense and hitting. They answered basically all the pitching questions for this upcoming year, but the offense and defense are both highly questionable. Polanco's injury created another question mark, so it seems like 2019 is another bridge year because it's not unlikely that they have to pull the plug on Bell and Moran. Dickerson, Marte and Cervelli can all handle full time duty, but those three and whatver Frazier is, is not going to be a competitive lineup. So at this point you are having to count on Bell and Moran being more than just competent enough to handle full time work.

The Gold Glove is the dumbest award there is. I like Corey but he's probably not even a top ten fielder

Pirates drafted Walker Buehler in 2012 out of high school, but he went to Vanderbilt. Pirates passed on him in 1st round in 2015 to take Kevin Newman.

interesting development if true. while I am certainly not surprised they don't want anything to do with a $5 million (the horror) option, this infield stinks.

Mercer was paid $6.75 million last year. ANYONE at $5.5 million should be considered a steal. **** this team already.

Per Perrotto:
"The Pirates, though, would bring him back only if he is willing to sign a minor league contract with the opportunity to make the team in spring training. Any deal would almost certainly include a low base salary and be heavy on performance bonuses."
CHEAP. AS. ****.

I get why the pirates don't drop $20 million per year for a good starting pitcher or whatever. but declining a $5 million option for a guy that has a reasonable chance of meeting or exceeding the $5 million value is nickel and dimer sht
