This reminds me of the time that the Pirates didn't tender Jeff Karstens, DK ranted about how cheap the Pirates were. They ended up resigning Karstens at lower figure, then he ended up playing himself into early retirement.

In positive prospect news, both Tucker and Craig are playing well in the AFL.

Kang, one year deal.
How did they get out of that 5 year deal?

He had a $5M option for 2019 that they declined.

IIRC, he and Harrison were going into an option for the 2019 season. The Pirates decided to not pick up either option. So they signed Kang to a 1 year deal today. I could be wrong.

Yep. This is a 40-man move as much as anything.

Gonzalez looks like bench fodder, but if he has a .700 OPS and can play short stop, he would beat out the other candidates. The other two are 19 year olds in rookie leagues.

I hope this indicates that they are going to go outside the organization to fill the RF hole.

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/clevela ... -leaguers/

Fangraphs likes this pitcher they got.
19-year-old Bahamian shortstop convert Tahnaj Thomas immediately becomes one of Pittsburgh’s best pitching prospects. Ultra smooth and athletic, Thomas has a gorgeous delivery that generates mid-80s velocity (92-95 in my looks at him this year) that plays well in the upper part of the strike zone. He can also spin a good breaking ball and has some nascent changeup feel that, for someone so new to pitching, is very promising. This is a prototypical teenage arm and, though that demographic of prospect has concerning attrition rates, Thomas has a good chance to be the best player in this deal one day.

Craig and Tucker both have encouraging AFL seasons. I think both of them have to take a leap to become legitimate MLB prospects, so there's a chance they take that step in AAA next year.

At this point if they don't go outside to fill RF they might just play with 8 guys in the field. Bucs Dugout has some good posts on the 40 man roster deadline that is approaching next Tuesday. Keller, Tucker, Martin, Brubaker, Waddell, Eppler and Christian Kelley seem like all the big names that are about to become Rule 5 eligible.

After the trade earlier this week the Buccos are left with 37 guys on the 40 man roster and somehow only 15 of them are fielders. I would think Keller, Tucker, and Martin are locks for the 40 man, and it wouldn't surprise me if Kelley and at least one of the pitchers get protected. Tanner Anderson, Luis Escobar, and Alex McRae would be obvious choices to remove from the 40 man, but this front office seems to love collecting fringe pitchers.

They can expose Waddell, Eppler and Kelley. Exposing Brubaker would be a mistake, even if he is from a third rate college like Akron.

It's encouraging seeing Tucker with a high average and k/bb rate in fall ball since his power is so lacking. He'll still only be 22 next year most of the year so his power could still come despite not even having doubles power yet - suggesting it's more about his swing. But also he's listed at 6'3 200 which is pretty good size - will craig btw is listed 6'3 212 and is almost 2 years older.

TL is GMNH confirmed. Tucker, Keller, Martin, and Brubaker added to 40 man; Tanner Anderson traded for no one.
