i will withhold comment until i read confirmation that the option was actually declined
Over on bucsdugout somebody mentioned the transaction has been deleted. So possibly it was an error (no pun intended)

this would be incredibly dumb if they declined it, but I don't see any reputable source confirming they denied it?

They've updated their transactions page http://m.mlb.com/pit/roster/transactions/

Kang no longer on the list and on the 40-man

Update: MLB has confirmed that this entries on the transaction and roster pages were an error on their part, and that the Pirates have not yet made a decision on whether to exercise Kang’s option.

Well unless they turn around and sign him to a couple years for less per year that's absolutely idiotic

Service time question for those brighter than me on the subject. Would picking up the option preclude Kang from getting any time in the minors, ie he'd have to be DFAd and subject to waivers. Perhaps they have another deal on the table with minor league options. If that's even possible? Just trying to figure out how they can rationalize this

$5 million is all the rationalizing you need

unless they are convinced he is a stiff at this point

I'm not sure I buy the $5MM price tag as the reason tbh. They paid Clint effing Barmes more than that

I’m willing to go out on a limb and guess that he was the cheapest option.
