Magnus has decided to not defend his world chess championship title. He had previously said that unless Firouzja won the candidates tournament, he would not play. Well, Nepo won again this year and he announced today that he truly will not be playing. He doesn't like the format and will not participate. So now it's Nepo vs Ding.

Interestingly, the last round of the candidates tournament featured Nakamura vs Ding where Naka only needed a draw to take 2nd place. Ding beat him and since he was runner up, he will play in Magnus's place.

Very interesting.

today at the sinquefield cup hans niemann beat magnus -with the black pieces- thus ending the latter's 53 game unbeaten streak in classical chess

Magnus dropped out of the tourney. Apparently Naka thinks that him dropping out is a way of saying Niemann cheated without actually saying he cheated. Bizarre.

nepo was straight out dubious as well
niemann was twice caught cheating on chess.com

Theory i saw:

Magnus thinks there's a mole in his camp
Explains why he quit even though he wasn't playing niemann again

Mole tells niemann to "check out" a certain line (maybe so mole can bet against magnus 7-1 line?)

Apparently it's the one magnus is preparing
But mole tells niemann it's from a 2018 game vs Wesley So

Niemann believes he's checking out a line from that game and thinks he has an excuse for how he came up with it

I guess when questioned later he says he knew he was winning but couldn't explain why since commentators couldn't see that he was better and he basically had to play perfect moves to be winning

Turns out that line wasn't from that 2018 game but maybe from some 2019 game

I don't think Hans has to say a single thing and kudos to him for addressing it. Magnus more or less nuked Hans with little to no evidence because he lost a game. Ridiculous. The longer that Magnus stays quiet the worse this is going to get.

Wouldn't it be more hikaru's response making trouble. I'd have assumed just poor sportsmanship from magnus until others insinuated cheating

Nah... Magnus pretty much said it without saying it. Magnus lost, withdrew and said he wouldn't be elaborating on why he withdrew or he'd get in trouble. What else is that to mean other than Hans cheated?

Of course, everyone jumping on it, especially Naka, was bad, but at the end of the day it all comes back to Magnus.

My knee-jerk is to say Magnus is being a baby BUT he’s lost before and not thrown a fit. If there was cheating the most likely scenario I read is someone leaked Magnus’ prep which is why Hans was ready for the somewhat strange line Magnus played with his G pawn.

If it’s leaked prep, either someone is a rat or something like leaving a computer or phone open at the wrong time tipped someone off. As in, someone left the plans out accidentally. IMO we’ll never know.

Magnus hasn't lost a classical game for 53 games and hasn't lost a classical game as white in over 2 years. He then lost to a sub 2700 rated player. If he loses in the same style to Ding or Ian or So, he likely doesn't bat an eye.

I agree we'll never know, but the bourdon of proof is on Magnus. Until there's any evidence at all to suggest Hans cheated, which to be clear... there's none. He didn't cheat, IMO.

Something like that. I saw it when Elon Musk tweeted a reddit post. Although I believe the reddit post (whose author said he was drunk and joking) said it was Magnus that had always been cheating with anal beads, not Niemann.

Win a game and watch the engine point out that just cause you won you blundered but not as much as your opponent. Miss simple checkmates in 1 and lose. Misclick, lose your queen, and enjoy your opponent not allowing a take back. ELO has become life and it defines who you are. Tilt balls and play blitz because why the **** not. Swear off the stuff for good, sleep, and immediately start playing again during your morning ****. At least your day will be ruined early and not at work when someone interrupts you asking, “is this theory?” against a 600ELO noob. Oh hell yes chess, teach me a lesson!

i hate this **** game
