Yeah puzzle rush and dailies are fun. Some of them with the 4 move mates that require you to sack a piece make my mind melt.

So far I decided I was going to pick one white opening and one black opening. Then play them to death.

For white I started with the Italian and have recently really been loving the scotch.

For black I started with the scicilian but after learning more about it realized it’s beyond what I can understand.

I then tried e6, b6, Bb7, and go from there. Got smashed, kept blocking my bishop’s lane.

I hate the King’s Indian, to easy to battering ram.

Now have landed with the Caro-Kann and it fits with how I like playing.

I’m still terrible and routinely blunder or hang pieces but it is happening less frequently. Ben Finegold lectures and Gotham Chess (how to win at chess and guess the elo) are great to learn from.

i have no method to speak of. very often i start off with what would have to be considered stupid moves. a3 followed by b4 for no other reason than to see if i can get out of a jam. as of today my best 5min puzzle rush is 20 and puzzles overall is 1516. several times i've got to 20 in the rush with a couple of minutes to spare only to fup the next three. i've managed to beat the first three advanced players on the computer as well as the 1800 computer on 2700 chess

I can’t even begin to imagine how quickly matches featuring Letang end in his defeat.

Dropped down to the low 500’s in 3 min games. Just now crossed 900 in them. It’s still monkey banging sticks territory but I’m happy with the progress so far considering it seemed impossible to play at that time limit before.

That’s from a few years ago. Karpov is one of the best of all time. Arguably top 5, certainly top 10 kind of player.

Wonder where that kid is these days.

Game six of the WCC was epic.
I was honestly shocked to see a classical-format win for Carlsen. I think they said that the last such win in the World Championship was in 2016. And that was also the longest game in WCC history. I knew ish must have gotten real when I went to watch Agadmator's recap of the game (which is how I'm following the match) and saw that it was like 45 minutes long.

They made a big deal out of it being the first win in classical chess in a championship in 5 years, but that was just 2 championships ago. In reality last championship was an anomaly where it was all draws. If you look back, typically there’s only a couple decisive games though the matches.

That said, games are going to be fun now. Nepo is going to have to go for it.

So what are the 5AF favorite channels/commentators for watching this World Championship?

I have always been on 'team Peter Svidler' - because the guy has a genuine dry self-deprecating humor, and makes all of his co-stars better. He used to be the main star of Chess24.com, but something must have happened, and this year he works for Levitov Chess, together with former WC Vladimir Kramnik and Ukrainian GM Evgenij Miroshnichenko.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2A2rG ... 4OdQP3zCBQ

During the times when Game 8 was pretty much decided (and the Russian guy did not want to concede), Svidler and Miroshnichenko started simply talking about the Squid Game, about what is wrong with Anna Karenina (A: the "old husband" is 42 :) ), about Svidler's whisky quota per game stream (one glass), about Miroshnichenko looking like bad Daniel Craig, etc, etc...

He’s apparently got a reputation for one little thing going wrong and crumbling from there. Magnus broke him.

Same - especially since that joke is apparently not known in English. I quickly google all the main words - and got nothing...
Incidentally, my old-time Czech joke is also not known in English, but it has VERY VERY limited usability! :D

Came to my office. Started a background chess broadcast on my secondary monitor. The very first sentence from Peter Svidler

"This broadcast is now fully dedicated to orzo - and why you should never order it."

They haven't deviated from discussion of pasta for the next 5 minutes... :D

I got deep into learning and trying to get good at Chess around the Magnus/Fabi WC. I was awful but after sinking to 700 something I built up to 1100 and thought I was on track to keep building. Then I started playing so badly I couldn’t keep my rating above 900. No idea why. I took off about 6 months from playing since the day I tilted balls and was just throwing games. I needed a break I guess.

I just got back into it a couple weeks ago and am consistently in the 1200-1300 range. I still get trounced from time to time, still blunder stuff here and there, but I’m def more patient. I went pure aggression previously but now am more of making sure my position is sound before pushing for progress. I’ve really tried to focus on taking what’s given to me and pushing my past pawns. I don’t think I can go much higher rating wise right now because I just don’t have the time to study or focus on playing. I really have to pay attention at this level and it’s a lot of fun.

I play only 2 opening,

White: The Scotch or a variation of the same setup
Black: The Caro Kahn (yes Gotham chess got to me)

Just played my most accurate game ever at 88.8%. Man was I proud until the eval…

Opponent hung his queen and I totally missed it. Just didn’t see it.

I hate and love this game sometimes.

Zero blunder games are the best. I play about one game a day and todays was a zero blunder game. I missed a tactic to trade my rook for his queen, but oh well. I was up a piece in a blitz game and just traded queens. Still won.

Yeah, I might play 2-3 real games a day on chess.com. I use Lichess to practice a ton with random games.
