so here we are again

i belong to a wine club. they ship me wine every quarter. every quarter i go through the gymnastics of them trying to deliver around 1:30PM during a week day. i then have a missed delivery, ask them to hold the package at the UPS center on beaver avenue, drive down there and pick it up. rinse and repeat 4 times a year.

last delivery was attempted on friday august 30. so on the evening of friday august 30, i went on the handy UPS app and said ill pick it up at the shipping center. start the clock of 5 business days - which i deemed to be today due to the holiday and the weekend. i receive an email today that it is going back to the seller.

i call up the UPS corporate line. hi yes i can see your package is being sent back to the sender. i ask if they can somehow pull it off the truck since today is actually the fifth business day. no sir - the fifth business day would have wednesday september 4. i ask if she can help me understand her definition of business day since the shipping center is closed on saturdays, sundays and labor day. we argue back and forth for about 5 minutes on this. i asked to speak to her manager and she placed me on hold. she comes back on about 3 minutes later and says i can pick the package up today.

do other people have issues with the semantics of business days in their dealings with others?

Business days can mean different things in different scenarios, you should take a look at reg cc for banks to have fun with business day semantics.

Well, go pick up your **** as opposed to waiting until what you consider the last possible day, especially when you know that you have had differing opinions on what "business day" means to companies... solved.

Back to the original posts for this thread. You got a "table" from a "a retailer we frequent"? I can not think of a retailer that sells tables that I would consider a retailer that anyone would "frequent".

Also I'm curious what Jim defines as a retailer. Wal-Mart? Amazon?

When I am going somewhere I don't order stuff that would be delivered while I am gone. I wait and order when I get back, or at least when it would be delivered after I got back.

Bro.

Wine club deliveries are a unique animal, as an adult signature is required since the shipment contains alcohol. It's usually not a problem if delivering to a place of work because there's someone in the mail room who can sign. But if you are habitually having a problem with a regularly scheduled shipment like a quarterly club membership..... frankly, that sounds like more of a you problem.

Maybe it is what I was thinking of as a table. I am picturing a dining room table or such. I wouldn't get a table from Wal-Mart or Amazon. I think of getting a table from a furniture store, which isn't a retailer that I consider a place that people frequent.

If it is a folding table (portable, etc) then it is just terminology.

Yeah, I've belonged to probably a dozen wine clubs over the years. Some direct from wineries, some with négociants like Cameron Hughes. They've always been pretty amenable to holding shipments to accommodate schedules and such. Having a hard time screwing up any sympathy over this one.
