Interesting. I didn't realize that Zach Smith was Earl Bruce's grandson. Bruce gave Meyer his first coaching job in the 80s and was a mentor of his

Also very interesting from Reddit
I dont know if any one will see this but Ive caught flak here and been downvoted before for calling out Urban and his bag man & fixer that handled shady **** for him. Ive even said the guys name in here and on discord, and low and behold the guy appears in this story...

A few days after Zach’s 2009 arrest, Courtney said two of Meyer’s closest friends – Hiram de Fries and Earle Bruce – asked her to drop the charges. Bruce is Zach Smith’s grandfather, de Fries is Meyer’s “life coach.”

That guy is still with Urban, and he is the guy that covered up shady **** for urban in the past.

On a July morning in 2009, Courtney Smith sat across the table from de Fries, a former attorney and Shell Oil executive. Courtney said de Fries pressured her to drop the charges.

That aint the first time he has been involved in things like this. The real story is there for any journalist willing to dig into that guy.

https://www.facebook.com/TheBrettMcMurp ... 7522486968

“Zach once told me,” said Courtney, “if he ever got fired and this all comes out: ‘I’ll take everyone at Ohio State down with me.’ ”

this guy knows dirt. I expect Mueller to be speaking with him soon.

That thread on Randy McMurphys Facebook is craaaaaaaazy.
You mean Brett right?

Pretty awkward the “Worldwide Leader” held off so long on breaking this story from Brett.

But hey, “Get Up” is a hit show!

Honest question, because I don't really.pay attention to CFB in the offseasons anymore and only recently saw this stuff blow up:

What's the rub on Urban? Is it that he didn't report it? Weren't the police already involved? Or is it that the police were involved and he tried to have it covered up and didn't discipline the coach?

Again, because I know someone is going to try to tell me I'm ignoring things: I stop following CFB once the Championship trophy is given out. The only things I've heard are things that have been retweeted and the cliff notes posted here.

Oh me, oh my.
incoming UPS fans with pitchforks
Not pitchforks. All I’ll say, after all the **** certain MSU and OSU fans have talked, then all this goes down... it’s damning.

Going off my limited understanding, how does this fall on OSU? Urban was at Florida in 09. If the issue wasn't well reported, or reported at all, how is OSU responsible?

This begins and ends with Urban Meyer. The issues you're trying to compare to aren't even close.

But again, take that with a grain of salt, because my understanding is extremely limited to sparknotes posts and tweets.

The part of McMurphy's story that was really chilling was Courtney saying that her own family told her not to call 911 for fear that Zach would be fired. What kind of special stupid is in people's brains nowadays? The 2009 situation where de Fries and Bruce visited Courtney to persuade her not to press charges would be something I would target if I was the 'prosecutor' in this investigation into what Urban did or didn't know.

I believe in due process and everything should be fleshed out before someone makes a PR decision based on what the pitchforks in the media and online have to say. Penn State wasn't afforded that opportunity in 2011 but then, nobody in East Lansing had an ax to grind against Dantonio or Izzo and likely no one in Columbus has an ax to grind with Urban.

You know, these guys discard players to the curb if they aren’t talented enough to play, yet somehow a multimillion coach feels compelled to keep this shtbird on his staff? Who the hell is zack smith and why the hell would Meyer jeopardize his job, legacy, etc. by keeping him around? Wierd priorities in this world.

Because the shtbird's grandfather is Earle Bruce, the former OSU coach who Meyer idolized. Smith would have been gone from Florida in 2009 if not for those family ties. Instead, Bruce and Urban's "life coach" go to Gainesville to talk Courtney into not pressing charges and now we're here. But hey, more distractions for OSU is just fine with me.

TIL

Zach Smiths grandfather Earle Bruce, became the head coach of OSU when Woody Hayes (known abuser) was fired.

 Like grandfather, like grandson

From wiki:
In his second season, he led the Colorado State Rams to a winning record and a victory over Oregon in the Freedom Bowl, their first bowl appearance since 1948 and their first bowl victory ever. He was fired two years later for, among other things, verbally and physically abusing his players and discouraging players from taking classes that conflicted with football practice.
https://web.archive.org/web/20180426035 ... bruce.html
After releasing a list of five allegations against Coach EARLE BRUCE, including two N.C.A.A. violations, Colorado State officials began turning their attention to finding a successor and restoring calm to a program in turmoil. Bruce, who was dismissed on Monday, has threatened to take legal action over his dismissal.

At a hastily called news conference on Tuesday night, C.S.U.'s president, Dr. ALBERT YATES, and the university counsel, BRIAN SNOW, said the allegations against Bruce extend beyond the physical and verbal abuse of players disclosed earlier.

While still not being specific about the charges, Snow detailed five infractions:

*Bruce violated National Collegiate Athletic Association rules relating to days off for players and off-season coaching of players.

*Bruce punched at least nine players "with a closed fist in unprotected areas of their bodies, including their stomachs" out of anger. Verbal harassment also was reported by players.

*Bruce used racist and demeaning comments in verbally abusing certain university employees and intimidating campus police and disciplinary officers.

*Bruce condoned or directed players to receive injections of painkillers so they could play, risking serious injury.

*Bruce obstructed the academic process by discouraging players from taking necessary courses that might have conflicted with football practice.

Snow and Yates were responding to a backlash over the firing of the popular Bruce that included vulgar and abusive phone calls to Yates, one of which contained a death threat.

OSU fans plan to hold a rally on the Suckeye campus in support of Urban Meyer. So by proxy, does this mean they support domestic violence? I seem to remember 7 years ago there being backlash at people coming out in support of Joe and calling them a term I refuse to use on here (some still do it today...and on here too, thinking that you're being funny). The double standards are incredibly rich but yet it's Penn State that has the culture problem.

Literally every story I've read has condemned the Urban rally, but UPS is the real victim, again.

Another favorite find from this preseason. His reason for having it? Because "the locals be coming for me". It was pretty funny to listen to Coach Mullen talk his way into a knot when asked about his 'no weapons' policy yesterday.

The funnier part is that, from what I understand, this is an Urban Meyer issue, and not a "OSU knew about everything and still tried to cover it up" issue.
