This is an interesting conference strategy:

https://deadspin.com/conference-usa-is- ... 1826386373
ext season, C-USA’s men’s basketball schedule will look nothing like that of any other Division I conference. Instead of releasing a hard-set regular season conference schedule, C-USA will seed its teams after the opening 14 games of the conference slate. The conference will then face its best teams off against one another over the next four games, with the end goal of placing multiple teams in the NCAA tournament and securing higher seeds for those teams. It’s the old “iron sharpens iron” adage, basically, with some added strength-of-schedule boost built in.

Or the top teams help make each other mediocre and no one gets in.

Yeah, that seems like it would have the opposite effect of what they intend to happen.

This was exactly my thought. You always hear the term "beating each other up" when it comes to conference or divisional play. There is a long explanation in the article but I'm skeptical.

It's elitist to say it but that's the way the NCAA committee thinks -- "they're C-USA, they're going to have to do a lot to get 2 or more bids most years". What can they do? Schedule better in the non-conference season and win those games. Middle Tennessee was a fantastic team this past year but they got whacked in their quarterfinals of their conference tournament by a team that wasn't really that good this season. In the non-con, they played Ole Miss, Vandy, Auburn, Miami, and USC. That's great scheduling. The problem was, they went 2-3 in those games with the 2 wins coming against Vandy and Ole Miss, who were last and dead last in the SEC this season (both 12-20). Unfortunately, those not in the power conferences are forced to schedule a little better and a few more road games than they might like in order to catch the eye of the committee. From a competitive standpoint, I like what C-USA is trying to do. But it won't mean anything unless 2 or 3 of the teams involved in that 5-team cycle have any sort of national buzz.

Ultimately I appreciate what they are trying to do but I’m not sure the committee is going to get too hot and bothered by someone saying “well, we played Tulane, Middle, Marshall and WKU all twice (maybe one of them 3x).

Remember when ESPN put together that Bracketbusters concept? They figured they'd put together some mid-major matchups to showcase them for the committee, maybe give them a little boost for Tourney consideration. Well, if Wichita and VCU are a pair of really good mid-majors and they play against each other, one of them is going to lose and thus may look bad to the committee should the loser fall too early in their conference tournament. Play against the so-called power conference teams and win those games and that's what will get you noticed....but you have to do it before January. If they truly wanted to do a Bracketbusters, match up one of those mids like a Middle Tennessee against like a 3rd or 4th place ACC/SEC team in early February and let's see what happens. But as we know, the 'power' conference teams won't go for that especially during conference season.

Zero good teams want to play a team like Mtsu. No upside to playing teams like that

Exactly. And that mentality needs to stop. The only way it will is if the committee stops rewarding 18-12 power conference at-large teams and takes a 25-win MTSU team who may have been beat too early in their conference tourney. But this like most other things is all about the Benjamins baby.

When Akron was on our run of 12 straight 20 win seasons, the same thing happened. Couldn't play anyone really.. Sure you can get games at UNC or Kansas but not really anyone with a name that you can actually go out and beat. Tough spot to be in as a good mid major. Then you get railed on for not having any good wins when you go 25-5.

So CUSA currently is:

UAB
North Texas
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
UTEP
UT-SA
Middle
Rice
Southern Miss
WKU
Marshall
UNC Charlotte
ODU
LA Tech

This actutally ain't going to make one bit of difference.

Yeah so pretty much Marshall or MTSU will get a decent win that the committee will give two shits about

College hoops gets underway tonight in earnest with a number of outstanding (and not so outstanding) matchups. Lots of freshmen to get to know and a number of under-the-radar schools will be vying for your attention. If you didn't learn enough about Nevada in their Tourney run last year, get to know them soon. They will be a major player once we get to March and I'm looking forward to getting to see them play live in December.

Sister Mary Jean. And yes, Loyola clipped Nevada by 1 in the Sweet 16 game.

Duke coming out and treating Kentucky like it's an exhibition game...at least in the first half.

was curious to see if zion williamson is good at basketball or good at dunking. was pretty impressed overall with his body of work yesterday. shoots the ball pretty well, explosive off the dribble, can actually run the ball up the court, tremendously athletic and strong. he is a more athletic dejuan blair. as much as i hate to say it, this duke team will be fun to watch.

Buffalo, with many of the same players who pounded Arizona in the 1st round of last year's Tournament, waltzed into Morgantown on Friday night and came back from 13 down in the 2nd half to blow the doors off the Mountaineers in OT. Massinburg for Buffalo was an unconscious fool from the arc to lead the comeback.

Add Buffalo to Nevada on the list of mid-major teams to keep in mind when March rolls around.

Looking forward to hearing huggy bear’s take on this loss. It will be a much better and much more entertaining take than mikey’s takes on football. Or food.
