I wonder if he’s ever hurt himself getting on all his bandwagons
He'll be okay, his Yankees are on the upswing

Having only watched PSU hoops a couple of times this year (because I can only stand to watch bad basketball for so long) and gleaning off of what others have said, it seems that what the Roman Catholic kids got away with back in Philly they can't get away with at the college level. Shot discipline and 'basketball sense' seems to be severely lacking with this group and they miss Tony Carr's presence more than they thought they might. Stephens is a very average offensive player (2 for 16, I believe, in the home loss to Wisconsin) and no one else has really stepped up to be a leader. The loss to Rutgers has to be rock bottom and Chambers is probably on borrowed time.

This is a good read. Penn State has never prioritized basketball, and that includes the budget. As the article states, if they fire Chambers they will just hire another clone who is happy to be way behind Franklin in the AD pecking order.

All you have to do is take one look at the arena they built to understand what they think of basketball there. It opened in 96 and has had **THREE** NCAA Tournament teams in it. Three in 23 seasons for a Big Ten team not named Northwestern is really bad. The problem is that outside of football season, Penn State is a wasteland far away from any major city plus there's no basketball tradition to draw any talent in. Yes, Purdue, Indiana, and Illinois are semi close to middle of nowhere areas but at least they have a bit of a basketball pedigree to draw on. Nebraska is in the same boat as PSU but they have a sparkling new arena and a fanbase that fills the place since there's nothing else to do in Lincoln in the winter (corn's already been harvested). The Bryce Jordan Center isn't even run by the athletic department and is more for maximizing profits from concerts and shows and Globetrotters games than it is for making cash off PSU basketball games. Hell, they even outpriced the PIAA when they tried to hold basketball state championships there (PIAA better off in Hershey anyway). PSU would be better off with an arena similar to their ice arena as far as size and intimidation level. But that article's right, as long as PSU football keeps making money, the basketball team will be an afterthought...and likely, a laughingstock.

To be clear - I have family and a daughter who are Tar Heels/NC rooted. I pull for UNC football and Penn St basketball as well, even though they are struggles, and support all Pittsburgh pro teams.

That said, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wish Penn St could have some bit of success in both sports like Florida, Texas, Michigan, etc. I was foolishly optimistic from last year, thinking with a Philly pipeline and fairly weak B1G, success in hoops could be had. I’m just not sure right now how it can be done since Chambers just isn’t a good coach and I don’t know how much better they could really do. Destroying Pitt, beating Ohio St X3 and winning the NIT may be the most excited casual PSU b-ball fans can get in a season.

Side note for any Pitt fans yucking it up about PSU basketball - PSU hoops leads Pitt hoops in the all time head to head series, and while your program has some hope, it still sucks right now, and Capel will bolt for the next best job once he’s good enough for it.

Not sure any pittclique fans have even mentioned UPS hoops. We forget that's a thing most of the time

Yeah. I don’t remember seeing any Pittclique guys going into the PSU Basketball thread and saying anything derogato...wait what? Oh. I’m being told there isn’t a PSU Basketball thread because they are an absolute joke of a program, so much so that their own fan base denies their existence.

^^ That looked like he was trying one of those miss on purpose deals and forgot that he's supposed to hit the rim.

Meanwhile, if Duke consistently hits from the outside like they did today, they might as well save us the trouble and just mail them the trophy. However, Gonzaga has been laying waste to opponents lately and they'll have something to say about it, especially with a full team now. I'm looking forward to seeing them live on Thursday night.

Weird night in college hoops...

--Kentucky gets beat on a tip-in at the buzzer that should have been ruled offensive goaltending
--Penn State beats Michigan. Any PSU hoops win is weird but especially against a team like Michigan. Though, PSU often plays Michigan tough
--Duke, down by 23 with about 9:00 left, comes all the way back and beats Louisville on two free throws after the refs reviewed a charge that took place in the circle. Play overturned to a blocking foul (correctly) and Duke hits 2 free throws with :16 left to win.

PSU has had plenty of close losses. Not surprised they beat Michigan.

I just hope this doesn’t make them think Chambers should not still be fired.

He's a beast. He grew up near where I live now, playing on the mean streets of Florence (SC). He almost went to Clemson, but Duke makes a lot more sense for him.

Eh, I wouldn't call them overrated. They're one of just 2 losses that Gonzaga has this season. They just ran into a 2nd half buzzsaw at Rupp last night and the Cats were pissed after they yakked away the LSU game on Tuesday night. I still think Tennessee is one of the four best teams in the country and their experience is going to be a big deal come Tourney time.

Also, there have been a few college hoops journeys the last couple of weeks that I haven't posted...

Great pics. Need to get to more college games. If we didn't have our daughter with us this weekend probably would have went to VT-Pitt.

I’ve been lucky that 2 of my work trips this year have coincided with local schools being at home. Even luckier to have connections to get me into those games and luckier still that the games involved a rivalry and the #3 team in the nation. But let’s face it, if it had been Loyola and Pacific, I probably would have gone simply because it’s Loyola and the Bo Kimble/Hank Gathers era happened during my formative years.

Not that Nebraska is very good, but it was a thorough beat down, and PSU has won 3 of the last 5 including a win over Michigan.

I want to say Chambers still has to go, but he brings in solid talent and I honestly don't know who they could bring in that would be any better.
