That's correct. Avatar was sold as an experience - more than a movie. End Game is a much better movie, but doesn't have the curiosity factor that Avatar had with its use of 3D.

My guess is Avatar 2 doesn't come close either.

If Endgame doesn’t beat it nothing ever will.
what if they rereleased The 'Burbs in theaters?

Can't. Not enough theater screens in the world to handle the demand. They know better.

Endgame is less than $45MM from passing Avatar, but is slowing down at the box office and Toy Story 4 is being added to the competition this weekend, so in the very near future Disney is going to re-release an extended edition with some deleted scenes added in for a last ditch effort to take the all time box office crown.
I thought this was a joke...

If this actually works, they'll just re-release Avatar and claim they're doing it to get everybody ready for Avatar 2.

Boxoffice champ is the one accolade Endgame hasn't earned yet, so I can understand why they'd want to drop it again. But with the TCF acquisition, Disney now owns both properties. So, money by the pound.

1.) Disney now owns Avatar, so they probably won't. I think at this point everyone but James Cameron knows that the collective palate for Avatar is gone and the movie has zero re-watch value.

2.) Avatar spent a completely bonkers 34 weeks in theaters, which is completely unheard of now less than a decade later. Endgame has been in theaters for less than 8 weeks, The Force Awakens hung around for 24 weeks, Black Panther 25, Infinity War 20, etc. Avatar ended its original theater run on August 12, 2010 with a domestic gross of $749.77MM. Two and a half weeks later, Avatar: Special Edition was released for another 12 week run and added $10.74MM to Avatar's domestic gross for a total of $760.51MM. Avatar was in theaters for 10.5 months before finally calling it quits. I say Marvel drags this out for as long as necessary so Avatar can piss off.

Titanic was in first-run theatrical release for 39 weeks, December 1997 - October 1998. It spent four consecutive months as the top grossing film; as late as July and August it was experiencing week-over-week increases in its take, and was still regularly pulling seven figures.

Disney probably doesn't care if it's Avatar or End Game on top, that's true. But Disney absolutely is invested in the Avatar franchise. Not only with the upcoming sequels, but they also need to drive attendance to Pandora at Animal Kingdom. Attendance is definitely not a problem for the time being, but as it gets older and crowds care more about Galaxy's Edge, they'll need the sequels to perform and for the Avatar brand to live on.

Really enjoyed Spider-Man: Far from Home.

Tied in Endgame and the credits scenes were worth staying for. MUST!

Really liked how J. Jonah Jameson has been modernized into an Alex Jones/Breitbart blowhard. Plus, JK Simmons...can’t imagine another actor playing that role. Kudos to Marvel for casting him again.

And for the end credits scene, it appears that Talos has been covering for Fury for a while. Fury says he hates eating toast or sandwiches cut a certain way, but was shown eating it that way back in one of the earlier Avengers films. I of course didn’t notice that, nerds on IMDb found that.

Spiderman: Far From Home was very good. Like the lighthearted tone of the spiderman movies. It's a nice break. Just a fun movie. Lots of cool callbacks.

Also, re: Thor. If Portman being Thor means that we have to endure any amount of time with Hemsworth not being Thor, I will not be pleased.

Portman's acting is greatly over rated.

But with the various Marvel streaming shows announced, and Star Trek streaming shows announced... the great "to sign up or not to signup" debate begins...

This was in reference to Far from Home credit scenes.

But Endgame has a thing too.

Gotta say, I’m tired of post-credit nonsense. Fade to black at the end immediately, and fade back in.
