There's a fantastic interview with End Game writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely on the latest episode of Smodcast. Well worth a listen.

So apparently this movie grossed more in its opening weekend than the cumulative gross for the entire DCEU?

No.

DCEU Domestic Total: $2,058.6MM
DCEU Worldwide Total: $5,272.1MM

Endgame is sitting at $2.260.2MM worldwide through Monday.

Maybe it was opening weekends' grosses, or perhaps I'm just bad at this.

Lol. Well let's take a look.

DCEU Opening Weekend Domestic: $734.8MM
DCEU Opening Weekend Worldwide: $1,704.4MM

Endgame made $357.12MM domestic and $1,223.65MM worldwide in it's opening weekend, so yes, still bad at it.

I do like this little factoid brought to the forefront of my memory by my painstaking research: Batman v Superman made $873.63MM worldwide; it's opening weekend accounted for 50.3% of it's total domestic gross and 47.2% of it's foreign gross. Combined the opening weekend attributed 48.4% of it's total gross. The movie was also in theaters for less than 90 days. What a **** disaster.

Just wanted to follow up on this now that I’ve listened to the entire interview. It’s over 2 hours long and gives a nice history of their careers then goes very in depth into writing choices of End Game including how they decided who was going to die, deleted scenes (both shot and cut at the script level), etc. It was a fascinating look at the process. Can’t recommend it enough.

Tom Holland has single-handedly reinvigorated my enthusiasm for Spider-man movies.

Also, Endgame:
  • Falcon as the new Captain America? Sorry, but that's a hard pass from me - especially after Chris Evans
  • Why did Captain Marvel need help getting the stones to Ant-Man? That was a bit lame
  • Tony. Man, even I almost choked up there, especially when they showed him telling his daughter that he loved her 3000. Definitely heard somebody else balling in the theater
  • Thor. GOTG. Make it happen
  • This trend in Marvel movies needs to continue. It's amazing
Oh, and no more of this:

Endgame sitting $173.2MM behind Avatar for all time worldwide gross. Avatar was in theaters for 238 days whereas Endgame is only at 24, but with how quickly movies turnover in theaters now it seems like a longshot to eclipse Avatar's number. Extremely impressive nonetheless.

Disney has released three movies this year and is already at $4,085.7MM in worldwide box office gross; it takes the worldwide gross of the next 19 highest box office totals to eclipse that number. Of course, that total includes the $404.8MM earned by Alita, which now just goes into Disney's pockets as well. With Aladdin, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Maleficent, Frozen 2, and Star Wars on the way the studio should easily eclipse the domestic ($3.092B in 2018) and international records ($7.605B in 2016) they have set.

These are fantastically, comically huge numbers to contemplate. I was 2 years old when Jaws became the first movie to gross $100 million at the boxoffice, and I was in college when True Lies became the first movie greenlit with a $100 million production budget. Now, those numbers are almost quaint. Solo took in nearly half a billion dollars and is considered a dud. wtf

The interesting thing about Endgame (to me at least, as nothing more than an observer) has been seeing the reaction fans are having to the various bits of fan service in the film. "I knew it!" and "Cap, on your left," "You can rest now," a single raised index finger, etc.... almost everyone I know says each of these moments truly pay off and feel earned. Waiting ten years and umpteen movies to have a key catchprase uttered on camera... it sounds like pretty top-shelf story telling, and sits in naked contrast to what everyone is saying about GoT, which has been a colossal bed-shitting.

It is getting me interested, as a diehard non-superhero enthusiast, in watching at least these last two Avengers movies just for experiencing those arcs.

Endgame is less than $45MM from passing Avatar, but is slowing down at the box office and Toy Story 4 is being added to the competition this weekend, so in the very near future Disney is going to re-release an extended edition with some deleted scenes added in for a last ditch effort to take the all time box office crown.
