Variance for my deck was approved last night. Now we just gotta find the decking material as it's all out of stock apparently :(

Lumber in general is hard to find. Lot of projects going on with people stuck at home.

Exactly why we decided to do the deck. We're just bored.

Anyone here have gutter guards? - i.e. Gutter Helmet or LeafGuard? Worth it? Cost a fortune?

Leafguard works well

Does anyone else deal with cicada killers? My neighbor's yard is infested with them, and they are starting to drift over to my deck. Thankfully they are not aggressive but still annoying.

Pic related.

And yes, this appears to be two cicada killers going at it with a third.... Getting involved as well?

Roofing contractor stopped by around 7 last night and said they would be by at 7:30 to start replacing our hail damaged roof from May, and to move potted plants and get the cars parked out on the street etc.

No roofing shingles have been delivered, yet, because we moved up the list a week due to two other houses occupants being sick and not wanting the constant pounding for 12 hours (not sure if COVID, but likely).

So they roll up at 10:45 am. It's already 90 here, and will top out at 96 with heat indices around 105+.

The pounding from my home office in our FROG is unbelievable. My big Yeti rambler was vibrating as they worked right above me.

Now I hope they get the new shingles delivered and put up before the afternoon thunderstorms start...which probably isn't likely.

Well, which came first...the shingles or the rain?

That's that tarps are for, if your contractor isn't incompetent...

Yeah, these guys are pretty good - I see a pickup truckbed full of tarps ready to go. But we've had violent thunderstorms every day or so because of the high heat and humidity. If the wind picks up, we could be in for a mess...

I wouldn't worry, They should brace the tarp using 2x4s nailed to the rafters to prevent wind from taking hold of it. That's what they did when I had my ridge vents replaced.

After my daughter's feet were full of splinters from the rotting play set in our back yard, it was time to pull the trigger on a new one. Unfortunately pretty much everywhere is sold out. Managed to find this though:

Gets here next Friday. Should be a fun weekend (well, probably a full week) project to put it together.

Hmm. Every backyard in our neighborhood has that exact play set. At least now I know how much it’s costs.

Speaking of play sets. The one I have for lil mac has a ladder to get in and out. I think I'm going to replace it with some steps and a railing. That way I can sit and watch from afar instead of being paranoid he's going to hurt himself.

You could do a ramp. That would be fun and relatively safe. Put on some grip tape or thin wood strips for traction.

Not a bad idea either.

I'll have to see what lumber I can come by these days. I hear it's on short supply.

Thinking of repainting my mailbox, and maybe getting a new reflective address sign.

Woohoo.

Yeah we got our daughter a wooden one from BJs about 5 years ago. One of the rock climbing planks rotted out in addition to one of the ladder steps. It is still usable but with our son just now learning to crawl... Not ideal.

It took my 14 hours to build a smaller version of that. Helps if you three or four people who can be working on other parts at the same time.

Yeah, shad... Luckily, we're one and done as far as kids go. This will just have to get her through her toddler/elementary years and then we can get rid of it completely.

It'll just be my wife and I working on putting it together, so I fully expect about a week's worth of work.
