Replace the double basin with a single...
I'm surprised you are replacing a double basin with a single. I don't get the appeal of a single basin. The house we just bought has a single basin, but we can't justify a double since our space is too small. Perhaps I'm missing the appeal of the single. Care to persuade me?
Its not that I don't like the double, its that I really really want a dishwasher.

The only place I can figure one would fit is under half of the sink thats there. So I replace whats there with something like this, and stick an 18" dishwasher below the drainboard half:

Gotcha. We actually have a very similar situation, except we already have a 26" single, and a small dishwasher. It seems like we run the darn thing every day. Our kitchen is plenty big, but it seems the designers didn't utilize the space very well. If I didn't already have a ton of projects lined up for the house, I'd tackle reorganizing the kitchen. Perhaps if I run into some extra money I'll do it.

I do like your proposed layout though. You'll have to post pics once the work is done.

If you have a dishwasher, a double-basin sink serves almost no purpose.

Also, it's difficult to get larger items under a normal faucet if you have a double-basin sink. For example, I can't really use my sink to wash my 24x18 cutting boards. Larger stock pots are nearly impossible to fill (or wash) because the divider will not allow lowering the item below counter level.

The issue with single basins is that you have to use the same basin for washing and rinsing. Eventually, the soap ratio dwindles to the point where you have to apply more soap. Also, there are times I use the basin to thaw frozen meats when I don't have time to thaw overnight. That takes up the entire sink where I can't wash my hands or do other things. Finally, I like to rinse the dishes with cold water, but use hot water for cleaning. The hot water won't last in a single if I rinse with cold, so I have to resort to rinsing with hot water.

If I had the room, a deeper basin on the washing side with a hose sprayer attachment on the faucet would be my ideal setup. Takes care of the large pots and cutting boards.

I wish I had a triple, where the disposal has its own little mini basin.

For some reason our basins are absurdly deep. My 5'6" wife loves it, and it'll be great for that thanksgiving turkey, but I have to stoop to get to the drain when I'm standing in front of it. Boo.

That's why Jesus invented these.

Baby bottles and breast pump parts. My dishwasher cares not for these. I'm thankful for my double basin. Though once this baby isn't such a baby I'd like to switch to a a single.

I jammed the business side of a truss connector plate into my leg yesterday resulting in a nice trip to the medexpress for some stitches. Felt good.jpg

Yeah we have a double basin and a dishwasher. Pretty much the only thing I use the side without the garbage disposal for is to throw random crap in there until I wash it.

Hooray for celebrating double basins for baby and breast milk paraphernalia washing. That sounds like my kind of party.

You almost need an entire kitchen for those breast pump parts. Wash, boil, dry, pump and repeat. I guess that leads to a point for the single basins - easy for baby baths.

our kids each drank pumped milk for several months without boiling. they are the healthiest kids we know.

i guess better safe than sorry, but that seems excessive.

Starting week three of kitchen remodeling hell. Cabinets are finally up. Floor goes down this weekend.

There are not enough take out joints in Beaver County to support much more of this.
