Maybe like an expandable spray foam?

We need a new roof. The current one is from '97, so it's due. I have no idea why I was thinking a new roof is 20k or more. We had a guy out and quoted us at ~8.5K. I'll take it.
Always get three bids minimum IMO. Especially for something like that.

I chatted with a few neighbors that all recently got their roofs redone. They all pretty much got 3-5 bids, and the company that they all went with was the one we had out to bid our place. The fact that I called him and he was there the next morning and had a quote to me that afternoon was more than enough to just go with them. I've had way too many experiences recently where I can't even get someone to come to my place, let alone get a quote and get the work done.

Fair enough. If they come highly recommended then that makes sense. I also have no clue how big your roof is. Our is hopefully good for another 5-10 years, but I was assuming 15k+ for our roof. Our house is a shade under 2000 sqft.

If I go to google maps and use the measure tool for our place, it's about 1600 sqft if you just do an outline of our house, garage, and shed. We have 1 very small dormer.

That's the unit of measurement used by my insurance company and my contractor. Naturally, they had different numbers in mind.
Looking at my insurance work, 1 square covers a surface area of 100sqft feet.
I looked it up at one point. Apparently a square is not an exact measurement. It's a range of square feet, and may have to do with how the shingles are cut or something like that. Kinda dumb, but chances are they will have some left overs anyway so nothing for me to worry about.

Not really important, but the only way my insurance company will settle a dispute between the adjuster (who measured on site) and my contractor (who measured on site) is by using Eagle View. A satellite imagery program. :face:

we bought a garden statue that came completely destroyed. i tried to return it and they told me to keep it and gave me a refund. ive been pretty successful gluing it back together and now haev a small hole remaining. ive been thinking it might be good to fill it with something that will hold it together from the inside. a similar model is below. the only thing i could think of woudl be concrete but that seems like a big endeavor for a small volume, plus the hole is an elliptical size with about 2 inches between the two foci. any recommedantions?

First thing that comes to mind is an epoxy
is there any epoxy that isnt extremely expensive? or extemly small quantity

Any big box store will have cheap epoxies, but you might need a decent quantity of it if you intend to fill the entire thing. And if you were going that route, I'd almost argue that maybe plaster might be a better solution? Cheap, easy to use, etc.

Thought something like this would work. A 2" hole isn't that big

Whatever you do, don't mix concrete by hand in a bucket.

My roof came in at $14k for 25 squares.
$13k for 23 squares here so sounds about right.
Are squares the number of packs of roofing? I'll have to count them up when the come to do the work to see how the prices compare.

36-panel solar array install complete. First inspection failed (guy showed up and before he covered the ground from the curb to the house and had already eyeballed like three corrections that were needed), but the roof guys were able to install the last of the support hardware. They had me come outside for the function test, and within about 20 seconds of them throwing the switch our electric meter stopped spinning and reversed direction.

Final inspection is next week (Mon or Tues iirc), and after that we good.

If my ac is blowing like normal upstairs, but zero air flow downstairs for a single unit, dual zone system, I have a f’ed up damper, right?

If it’s like mine, with manual dampers, perhaps the wing nut holding it in position loosened up enough that it closed completely.

Mind sharing the cost?
I know you're in Cali. I see anywhere from $8k to $55k in SWPA.

Also who has an electric meter that still spins. We're all smart meters here

We paid $1k deposit, another $18k or $19k due when we pass inspection and go live, and the rest is financed for I think 5 years (we budgeted to pay it off in 3, so we're good there). The full contract price is something like $35k, but our actual final tab will be dependent on tax breaks and incentives and whatnot; we might not know the tally for a year or so. But all the while our wonk-ass spinny dial will be going the other way 360 days a year making us money.

Is there an estimated time for your break even? Like, in 7 years the system will be paid for assuming an average electric bill of $200

I called them Monday, they were ate my house Tuesday to measure and got me a quote, then called me yesterday to schedule us for Monday to do the roof.

A big service being done from a company with multiple neighbors that have good things to say at an affordable price in the span of a week... something feels off.

Surprised none of you are investigating solar shingles for your roof, given all of the solar talk recently. I see ads for that stuff constantly on FB.

I briefly looked, but the technology just isn't quite mature enough for me. Slap some solar panels on top of my asphalt roof? Yeah, sure... go for it.

I wonder how energy rates skyrocketing affects solar sales and implementation. If the panels themselves aren't going up in price, I could see more people moving in that direction to offset power costs.
