Groat is apparently retiring after this season. Glad he got at least one more game to call. His mind is staring to go and sometimes his commentary is incomprehensible, but I’ll miss hearing him on the radio. His in-game anger rivals only the Old 29er in Pittsburgh sports.

Just saw that and that **** sucks. They've already got Aiken on the crew to keep Hillgrove and Groat under control; let the old man continue to do home games until he decides enough is enough.

Edit: Groat saying goodbye.

Yeah, can't do it. Just hearing how sad his first couple words were, I had to bail.

Man, this sucks. Yes, Groat makes me cringe sometimes when I listen to games on the radio, but so many fond memories of him calling games. It's an end of an era - soon Lange and Hillgrove will be gone and I won't know where my childhood went.

Hoops team got a commitment from SF Justin Champagnie. Offer sheet made up of A10 and AAC and Big East type schools. Not quite what pitt needs to go over the top but that offer sheet is better than many many recent pitt recruits.

Update:

I see that he had an offer from pepperdine. I don't like the guy. Anyone who willingly goes to pitt over pepperdine is a gd idiot.

What's weird about the Champagnie commit is that his twin brother, who also had a Pitt offer but at this point is the lesser player, decided to go to prep school instead of heading to college next season.

This commitment moved Pitt's 2019 class up to 35th in the 247 rankings. Last year Capel came in and managed to put together the 32nd ranked class. Previous seasons:

2017: 51
2016: 112
2015: 80
2014: 87
2013: 31
2012: 25
2011: 13
2010: 33
2009: 26
2008: 74

2008 was an underrated class that was brought down by the poor recruiting score for Jermaine Dixon, who was a useful player. Also in this class were Nasir Robinson, Ashton Gibbs, Tray Woodall, and Dwight Miller (sucked). 2009 added Dante Taylor, Lamer Patterson, Talib Zanna, and JJ Richardson (sucked). Those are two solid recruiting classes with some good players.

2010 was JJ Moore, Isaiah Epps, and Cameron Wright; 2011 was Malcolm Gilbert, John Johnson, and Durand Johnson. None of those recruits panned out and it kind of spurred the downward trend of the program. Two lost recruiting classes were then paired with Adams (one and done), Robinson (good but never improved), and Chris Jones (sucked but the coaches loved him) in 2012 and then Newkirk (transferred because Dixon hated athletic guards and was being a little pissbaby about moving from the Big East), Uchebo (injured as ****), and then Young and Artis, who were **** good. Four recruiting cycles managed to produce three good players who lasted more than two years with the program. Good job Jamie and Company.

2014 was that dodint boy Cameron Johnson, the Great White Hope Ryan Luther, and Tyrone Haughton, who sucked. 2015 was more **** from Dixon with Damon Wilson and Rozelle Nix. Now we're at six recruiting cycles producing four good players and one semi-serviceable tall local kid. This is of course when Dixon realized he had been recruiting like complete **** and decided to hightail it back to Texas where he's been padding his record with a joke of an out of conference schedule to compensate for getting mauled in conference.

Stallings then comes in and recruits one guy in 2016, Corey Manigault, who he ran off before the season was over, but it probably didn't matter because he's not very good anyways. The score for 2017 must be propped up by the sheer number of recruits as Stallings brought in seven guys: Jared Wilson-Frame (wish he had more eligibility), Marcus Carr (sucked and gone), Peace (sucked and still around maybe?), Shamiel Stevenson (sucked and gone), Parker Stewart (kinda okay but gone), Terrell Brown (sucks and is still here), and Samson George (sucked and still around maybe?).

TLDR: Kinda in summary: Jamie Dixon is a dick hole. Over the 8 previous recruiting cycles before Capel Pitt had 5 recruiting classes that produced absolutely nothing and were out of the program shortly after they arrived on campus. It's no wonder this program is a mess. Capel has put together two recruiting classes that are more in line with the level of national ranking we'd see when Pitt was relevant and good. There's still scholarships left for this recruiting class and hopefully they can add a big man or two, but in general I think he's got the ship heading in the right direction.

Also, **** Jamie Dixon.
