Hopefully "indefinitely" is like 24 hours, because Wirginis would be a huge loss.

Peak says "the official word on Sear is that he's taking a leave from the team for personal reasons. His return is unknown." Peak added that his return seems unlikely.

Sear did not have a terribly good game on Saturday and I'm not sure how much of the lack of TE usage this year is "Watson sucks" or "the players aren't good".

Here's what concerns me:

In 18 games, Watson has had three transfers (Flanagan, Clark, Gragg), three recruited players (Sear, Carrigan, Reeves) and a walk-on (Medure) at his active disposal. In 18 games, those players have produced 40 catches, 337 yards and 1 TD. That's an average of 2 catches and 18 yards per game from the position and that's probably worse when you consider that 33 of the catches, 282 of the yards and the touchdown came from Flanagan and Clark last year.

Clark's reasons for leaving were supposedly not entirely football-related, but he's still playing elsewhere. I know there were concerns with Reeves's size and he hasn't done much yet at YSU, so the jury's probably still out there. Now Sear is gone. They've already had to move a DE recruit to TE in camp, AND they had a de-commit that specifically mentioned concerns about how the position was being utilized.

And I keep coming back to this - 2 catches and not even 20 yards a game from a position that's evolved in modern-day football the way the TE position has is absolutely inexcusable. Pitt has some very, very average players at TE (Erik Gill, Darrell Strong, Steve Buches) in my fandom and gotten more out of them than this.

I know they need to win games and they still have a shot at bowl eligibility and - ridiculously - the Coastal Division if they pull an upset or two and get some help. But this second half of the season really needs to be an open evaluation of Watson, Sherman and Salem. This passing game is absolutely atrocious, it has been for a season and a half and now it's impacting future seasons.

Tim Murphy was pretty good and part of that wave of good players that Walt recruited out of ohio.

pitt is 21 point dogs against notre dame. everyone's favorite super panther fan, Kenneth t kangaroo, will be making the road trip to south bend for this event. a 21 point spread and the fact that the marsupial will be in attendance (career away record: 4-14) provides little hope for the super panthers.

@Stoosh - what is the average yards and TD per game from our WR corps?
Since Stoosh apparently decided to get lazy, I honorably decided to do this work for him (and you).

Through the glorious six games this season has already brought us:

9.33 Receptions, 124.5 Yards, and 0.83 TDs per game.

What's that you ask? How does that compare to previous seasons? Well, I thought you might ask that.

2017: 11.83, 156.33, 0.50
2016: 7.69, 128.69, 1.08
2015: 10.46, 127.46, 0.69
2014: 9.92, 142.23, 0.85

2017 was the start of the Watson era so of course it sucked, just not as bad as this season. 2016 was the year of Canadian Glory and though the WR numbers aren't overally impressive, Weah had 870 yards and 10 TDs on 36 receptions and Orndoff, Conner, and Aston combined for an extra 6 receptions, 80.77 yards, and 1.08 TDs per game. In 2015 Chaney was running the show and he was a dolt, but Boyd was still a GOAT and accounted for well more than half of Pitt's WR passing game; Boyd plus Ford accounted for 85%+ AND Holtz and Orndoff were good for an extra 45 yards per game.

2014 was the last year of the Chryst Dynasty, Conner established himself as a legend with nearly 1,800 rushing yards, but Pitt still managed a total average 185.9 yards per game through the air, nearly all of which went to Boyd, who in his best season at Pitt put up almost 100 yards receiving per game and accounted for 68% of WR receiving yards.

Total Passing Yards Per Game and % From WRs:

2018: 149.2; 83.5%
2017: 217.7; 71.8%
2016: 221.7; 58.0%
2015: 190.6; 66.9%
2014: 185.9; 76.5%

The 2016 squad also averaged 225.1 yards per game on the ground and is the only offense of the Narduzzi era to average more than 400 yards of offense per game.

So if I make this very basic and assume we are in 2 WR sets most of the time (though a decent chunk is still 3 WR..) that's 4.66 receptions for 62 yards and .4 TDs per game per WR.

TEs average 2 catches and 18 yards per game

The greater point I was getting at is the entire passing game is the sux and TEs aren't being as "unused" as it appears. No one is really getting the ball because some combination of Pickett's happy feet, the line being a sieve, and Shawn Watson is hindering everyone's ability to catch a pass.

Eh, while the entire passing game sucks, almost 84% of the receiving yards going to WRs is a pretty significant increase over previous seasons, especially when you consider that this team doesn't have 2014 Tyler Boyd on it. No one is getting used in the passing game, but the TEs are being used less than usual.

After taking on this extensive research project, I would like to congratulate Aaron Mathews on his complete lack of production. Dude has played in every game since showing up on Pitt's campus and has put up 25 receptions, 269 yards, and 0 TDs in 30 games, just barely edging out Mack's 265 yards in 5 games this season.

84% of a small amount is still small. they all suck

Matthews made a poor decision trying to go to WR from defense. He is a good blocker though.. That said who knows what he'd look like in a competent offense

Former Panther savior QB recruit Thomas Macvittie is 92-172 passing for 1,064 yards, 16 TDs and 8 INTs in 6 games at Mesa CC. He has rushed for 252 yards and 4 TDs and fumbled 3 times
