That blows big time, this defense works if and only if you get pressure with the front four and specifically the ends and that dude fit the bill

Eh, it sucks but at the same time I feel like half of the past two classes have been defensive linemen.

Fantastic read by Brian Batko on the 2008 Sun Bowl, probably one of the worst bowl games ever played in college football's modern era.
https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pit ... 1812200121
Outside of the setting of Sun Bowl Stadium (one of the more unique backdrops in college football, in my opinion), I remember nothing else from the game outside of the score. I forgot Pinkston didn't play and I also forgot how much I couldn't stand Matt Cavanaugh. In fact, wow, it really feels like we're reliving the Matt Cavanaugh nightmare with Shawn Watson.
That and they really don't like Chase Clowser.

Worst game I've ever witnessed with the eyeballs in my face. Yes there have been bigger heartbreaks, disasters, and disappointments, but this game was pure ****. And yes, Watson is Cavanaugh 2.0, yet somehow seems even less competent.
Edit: I love that even Wanny is confused by his offensive game plan, which he stuck with for the hell of it I guess.

That was also the year that Pitt to lost to Rutgers 54-34 on what became Mike Teel Career Day. Teel, who was mostly awful, ended up throwing for 361 yards and 6 TDs because Wanny & Bennett's defensive scheme was built on shutting down Rutgers's almost-nonexistent rushing offense. The gameplan left Kenny Britt, Tim Brown, and Tiquan Underwood in one-on-one matchups almost the entire game. Everyone in the stadium with the exception of Wannstedt and Bennett knew going into that game that Rutgers couldn't run and that their biggest threats were those three receivers.Worst game I've ever witnessed with the eyeballs in my face. I watched that game at a bar with a bunch of friends and I never wanted to put my fist through my radio more than when I heard Wanny discuss that strategy in the post-game press conference on the way home.
I loved Wanny but I'm pretty sure that for 50-60% of his Pitt tenure, he was either blissfully unaware or entirely confused by what was happening on gamedays.

I didn’t watch that game because I was still mad about Cinci. I also have never watched the “Armed Forces Bowl” game against “Houston” which imo was a collective delusion and never happened.

I remember following the military bowl on the computer while i was at work. I was like “oh neat we are winning big” then i hit refresh after doing ~45 minutes of work and pitt was losing. It was one of those things that made the impending departure of chryst a little more digestible.

I’m getting my disasterous bowl games mixed up. I was referring to this other war-related bowl game:

The military bowl was just an ass kicking. Pitt didn’t show up for that game at all.

Since i’m On a roll here, i’m Gonna get yinzer here and ask why pitt stopped recruiting white guy tight ends from the wpial? We had a pretty epic run of tight ends that ranged from OK to great that met a lot of yinzer criteria- Steve buches, Erik gill, Pelusi, mr. wonderful, Holtz, that guy from franklin, pa, Dickerson (not white, but that is ok), etc.

Ah gotcha. I attended that one. Henderson ran the kick back and things were looking good. Then Keenan Reynolds just systematically destroyed PittI’m getting my disasterous bowl games mixed up. I was referring to this other war-related bowl game:

https://twitter.com/RichieWalsh/status/ ... 02562?s=19Paris Ford not currently here in El Paso with the team.

Batko provided a little more info/speculation on Ford's absence via Twitter as well. Said he's going to ask Narduzzi about it when practice ends and the coach meets with the media. Someone tweeted to Batko wondering if this was a "left the team/will transfer" situation. Batko responded by saying he didn't think so, at least not based off things he's heard there but he would wait to see what Narduzzi says.
Filtering through the PL tire fire that has already broken out on the board about this, there IS some speculation that his absence could be academic-eligibility related.

that is unfortunate and I'm not sure how pitt is going to react to losing his contributions during the 2-4 times he actually appears on the field per game

This is kind of where I'm at with it, too.that is unfortunate and I'm not sure how pitt is going to react to losing his contributions during the 2-4 times he actually appears on the field per game
Just yesterday, Alan Saunders posted an article that discussed Ford's position switches. move to corner was initially a move made to hopefully get him on the field sooner. Pinnock was injured to start the year and the hope was that Ford would push Motley, Mathis and Jackson for playing time. Instead, he fell behind all three and was also bypassed by Therran Coleman and (true freshman) Marquis Williams in some of those expanded DB sets. Jackson locked down one CB position and when Pinnock got healthy, he quickly bumped Motley from other starting CB slot.
Ford has obviously struggled with the defense. I think there are some legitimate complaints about the things this scheme sometimes asks the safeties to do, but Hamlin - recruited as a corner - has picked it up. Stocker and Campbell have also picked it up, to varying degrees of success.
I hope he sticks around and fulfills his potential, because he had ridiculous potential and also seemed genuinely excited to be here. If not, best of luck to him wherever he lands.

From Brian Batko on Twitter:
"Pat Narduzzi says defensive backs Paris Ford (personal reasons) and Bricen Garner (disciplinary) are the only two players who did not make the trip to El Paso. Added they could still be here later in the week and are with the program."

so pitt is playing in a bowl game today @ 2:00
this game is probably more important to the program than the first few bowl games on the nard dog era. actually, this game might be more important to the program than any bowl since the fiesta bowl. and really, the outcome of this game is more important than the outcome of the fiesta bowl. you have to be happy with how the conference schedule played out, and no one should diminish a coastal championship. but 7-7 with a lot of blowout losses is not a good look and will probably result in a lot of people looking past the progress the program has made.
I hope pickett doesn't stink.

7-7 is inevitable. Whether it’s Pickett sucking, offensive line being terrible, defense forgetting what they’re doing, stupid mistakes, bad turnovers, whatever, etc., 7-7 is inevitable.
