Great throw by KSP. Can’t believe they called a pass play there.

Pitt nearly beat a school record for most rushing yards in a game. Had 484 and the record was something like 523.

Listened to most of the game on the radio. Carter sounds like a great find.

Crazy ending. Glad I bought tickets and went. Defense optional.

I don’t get how it took this long to get Carter into a game if that is what he’s capable of. Kid looked more explosive than Shocky has all season.

Maybe because he was on the defensive side all season. The coaching staff must have seen something in him to have him switch sides.

That was one of the weirdest games ever in terms of yardage on the ground and yardage in the air(until the last drive) I had ever seen. Just weird all around. Glad to get a win. I looked at my wife as we left the stadium and said you will never see a game like that again.

When there was 5 seconds left I looked at her and said Pitt will find a way to lose this game. It's what Pitt has made me expect to happen. Glad I was wrong yesterday.

Also on the T ride over I wanted to go up to all the young Pitt fans and tell them to pick another team as to not have their heartbroken over and over.

From Chris Peak's "10 thoughts" column on PL about the defensive performance:
Okay, for all the good that there was in Saturday’s game - and there was a lot of it - there was also some bad. A lot of bad. Like, 619 yards of bad and a career-high passing yards’ worth of bad. Yes, Pitt’s defense was bad for most of the game. And what’s worse, it seemed like all the old problems were back: schematically, there were familiar issues covering slot receivers and tight ends, and in terms of personnel, there was sloppy tackling and just looking generally slow. And perhaps worst of all - although there is competition for that distinction - Pitt was getting pushed around. Duke looked like the more physical team, the stronger team, the team that intended to impose its will.

That was particularly true in the run defense, where Pitt seemed to be getting blown off the ball and gave up 223 yards on the ground. That’s the fourth time this season the Panthers have allowed more than 200 rushing yards; for comparison, last year’s Pitt team gave up 200 rushing yards just twice in 12 games.

I have faith that the rushing issues will be corrected. The pass defense, though…that’s probably going to be a lost cause against certain styles of offense for the foreseeable future.

That said…
Now, before we completely bury the defense, we have to give some credit (or maybe only bury 3/4 of the defense). Because when the third quarter turned to the fourth quarter, something changed or clicked or a light bulb went off - however you want to put it, the defense found itself in the fourth quarter. Consider that, through three quarters, Duke’s offense had put up 538 yards of total offense, 369 passing yards, converted 8-of-10 third downs and scored 42 points.

In the fourth quarter? 81 total yards (50 of which came on one play). 27 passing yards. 0-of-3 on third down. And three points.

They literally went from playing one of their worst games to one of the best quarters they’ve ever put together. I can’t explain it - something different happened on every key play - but the results speak for themselves. Because if we’re going to talk about fourth-quarter comebacks, Pitt doesn’t pull it off on Saturday without the defense stepping up. Even when the Panthers gave up a 50-yard run on Duke’s second drive of the fourth quarter, they stood tall and forced a field goal. And then the play of the game came on third-and-10 at midfield when Amir Watts sacked Daniel Jones to force a punt and give the offense a chance to win.

Being really bad for three quarters and then really good for one quarter is a dangerous and, ultimately, unhealthy way to live. But Pitt made it work on Saturday.
Pitt's defensive performance in the 4th quarter reminded me of MSU's perfomance in the 2014 Cotton Bowl against Baylor (the last time Narduzzi served as DC for Michigan State and unknown at the time, probably a much more accurate indicator of what we were going to get with his defensive scheme than we ever realized).

In that game, Baylor was up 41-21 going into the 4th quarter. After spending 3 quarters looking awful, MSU's defense didn't allow a point in the 4th quarter and came up with a number of big plays, allowing their offense time to score 21 to win the game.

Like Peak said, it worked for Pitt this time. I'll have to dig to see if someone has the information, but it looked like Pitt finally went more with the nickel sets in the fourth quarter so I think that was one change. I know they were missing Camp up front, but it finally helped that Hendrix and Briggs had the best games of their Pitt careers. Both of them came up big in the fourth quarter.

Our "Because We Can't Have Nice Things" moment of this week:

Narduzzi says Keyshon Camp is out for the year after being injured against Notre Dame. No reports yet on the nature of the injury.

Narduzzi said in his press conference today that V'Lique Carter has been working with the WRs, RBs and DBs. I don't think he's even listed on the depth chart at any of those spots, but the depth chart doesn't seem to mean so much.

Duzz also suggested that another freshman - unnamed - will likely be making his debut on Friday. Given the Camp news, I'm going to guess either Tyler Bentley or Devin Danielson.
