I’ve never seen an OL so good at run blocking while being so bad at pass blocking.

Imo the primary reason the passing game is so sucky is the offensive line. The secondary reason is the coordinator. The tertiary reason is the shittay receivers. Four is Kenneth Shane Pickett. Imo

For those of you who do not read the level-headed panther lair, i will post here: pitt has 27 completions in the past two game. 15 of those completions were for 49 yards. There have been 6 sacks and 2 interceptions. So 27 completions compared with 15 basically useless catches, 6 sacks, and 2 picks. That’s 23 bad plays compared to 12 ok plays.

Lopes had a 64 yards on two receptions today, but his longest catch was for 68 (translation: he lost 4 yards on his other catch). French had two catches-one for 32 yards and one for 0 yards. The 32 yard catch was literally the only ball beyond 10 yards that was completed. The rest of the attempts ended in sacks, an interception, a shitty throw, or a drop.

It is 2018. Who the eff has problems getting guys open in 2018

Very happy with the win and also very happy with the fact we're somehow 2-1 in the ACC (don't get angry about the UNC loss, don't get angry about the UNC loss, don't get angry about the UNC loss, don't get...).

Some thoughts...

1. I'm stealing this from Peak's "Drive Home" podcast, but Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall deserved Samuel L. Jackson's Wallet Awards for their performance Saturday. Pitt ran 22 plays in the fourth quarter and 19 of them were running plays. By the time they were three plays into that final drive to tie the game, it became apparent that they weren't going to try to throw. By my count, between those two drives, Ollison carried 10 times for 71 yards and Hall carried 8 times for 48 yards. Not once did they lose yards on any of those carries. Unreal job by those two and phenomenal run-blocking by the offensive line.

2. Additional context for the 4th quarter performances by Ollison and Hall: Of the three pass plays, two came in the quarter-opening drive. Hall opened the quarter with a run. That was followed by the dumb-ass screen on 1st and 10 to Aston and then the sack/fumble on the next play. The next time Pitt threw after that was the endzone shot at the very end of the quarter. So yes, we ran the ball on 18 straight plays.

3. Aaron Matthews blocks at a Hines Ward-like level. The TD on the screen to Araujo-Lopes absolutely does not happen without Matthews's block to seal the outside.

4. It sounds ridiculous to give credit to a defense that allowed 37 points but I'm going to credit the defense. They held Syracuse to under 400 yards of offense, solid numbers especially given Pitt's defense. They held Dungey to under 200 yards passing and did not allow a 100-yard rusher or receiver. Pitt was credited with seven hurries and two sacks (Wirginis & Weaver). Most importantly,...

5. The defense forced three turnovers and even better, two of those turnovers were converted into 10 points - 7 immediately from the Wirginis/Dane Jackson play and three points on the ensuing drive following Watts's interception. The third turnover, of course, ended the game, and Coleman's explanation of the play to the media afterward makes me wonder why he has not been playing more. Hopefully that changes.

6. The more I watch other teams and listen to some of the more respected college football media types, the more I wonder if what we saw from Pitt's defense Saturday is more of what coaches of most programs. I'm talking about the vast majority of college football programs - those that don't feature a two-deep defensive depth chart chock full of 5-star and 4-star kids. With so many teams running variations of offensive schemes designed to score and score quickly, you bend but don't break on most drives. Surrender yards, just don't surrender points and if you surrender points, try to keep it to FGs. Force a few turnovers a game and hopefully convert at least two to points.

7. I'd love to see the snap breakdown on defense, but it really looked to me like Pitt played an awful lot of nickel. In the first half, I saw a lot of Pinnock and Jackson at corner, Mathis as the nickel back, Stocker and Hamlin at safety. I think they said Mathis got hurt in the second half so that was when Coleman got worked in. Briggs played enough to get 5 tackles but I honestly don't remember seeing him as much. Hamlin had 14 (!!) tackles.

8. Completely absent from the stat line was Dewayne Hendrix. Surprise. Kenny's Bryan Murphy comparison couldn't possibly be more accurate.

9. By the stat sheet, it looks like Pitt only had three penalties the entire game. No real drive-cripping, momentum-killing, WFT-were-you-thinking moments that I remember. Hopefully another trend that continues.

10. I have no idea how you fix the passing game. It starts on the offensive line and it's completely broken. If they had a competent RT, Bookser could move back to RG but neither John Peterson nor Dave Borbley have apparently been able to coach anyone up to a respectable RT level so Bookser plays out of position. The RG is a redshirt senior who shattered the Dorin Dickerson Position Switch team record about three years ago. The center is a redshirt sophomore who was a walk-on. The LG is a redshirt senior who was a defensive lineman until 2016 and played mostly special teams last year. The LT is graduate transfer from a MAC school.

It's the most "no sh!t, Sherlock" thing I've ever posted here, but Pitt obviously can't sustain this against ND and at the very least, they'll have a couple of weeks to get it figured out for that final five-game ACC run. I have no idea what they do this weekend. I would think a good start may be to get Pickett into the shotgun and actually try to run a crossing route or two, but that may make too much sense for Shawn Watson. Maybe they run the wildcat the whole thing and it's Michigan State 2007 all over again. Maybe they remember that AJ Davis and Salahuddin can carry the ball, too, and we don't have to beat Ollison and Hall to death.

Who knows. If Watson is ever going to have his "Matt Canada UPS Game in 2016" moment with this offense, it needs to be this weekend.

In a lot of ways Pitt is a poor man's Virginia Tech, so not good things for Saturday.

Related, but @meow game will be on 36.1 this week at 2:30pm.

good take imo

its frustrating because I still have no idea if Kenneth Shane Pickett is good. he missed another deep ball that he didnt put enough air under this weekend as well. There is zero pocket to speak of. Someone on the PL made the good point that the reason they can run block so well and yet be awful in pass blocking is because they are starting only one real tackle in Millin. Bookser looks terrible with speed rushers on the edge and almost got Kenneth Shane Pickett killed on that strip sack in the second half. Herndon is a sieve in the passing game as well, so the entire right side of the line is constantly getting caved in by the pass rush.

Not the kind of Pitt football news you want Notre Dame week, or any time, but senior middle linebacker and captain Quintin Wirginis is out indefinitely after an injury in practice Tuesday

Because we absolutely, positively cannot have more than one or two nice things at a time, Brian Batko is reporting on Twitter that Quintin Wirginis suffered a non-contact knee injury in practice yesterday and is out indefinitely.

faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

This is not what I meant when I said I hoped Chase Pine would get more playing time.

Be a good time for them to use a linebacking trio that makes more sense. Brightwell-Reynolds-Pine. Hopefully "indefinitely" is like 24 hours, because Wirginis would be a huge loss.
